UPDATE: Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama has apologized to WXYZ reporter Peggy Agar for calling her "sweetie" during a campaign stop Wednesday in Sterling Heights.
Obama apologized in a voicemail he left on Agar's cell phone at 3:16 p.m.
(WXYZ) - Reporters on the presidential campaign trail are buzzing about Barack Obama calling WXYZ's Peggy Agar "sweetie" during a tour Wednesday of a Chrysler plant in Sterling Heights.
The comment came during a tour of the plant when the Democratic presidential candidate tried to brush off a question from Agar about help for autoworkers. "Senator, how are you going to help the American autoworkers," Agar asked Obama. "Hold on one second, sweetie," he replied, explaining he would answer in a later media availability.
In a posting on the New York Times Political Blog titled "Obama: Hold On, Sweetie," reporter Jim Rutenberg pointed out this wasn't the first time Obama used the word: "Back in Pennsylvania in early April, Senator Barack Obama took some heat for calling a female factory worker 'sweetie,' in Allentown."
Obama's comment to Agar has also been discussed by reporters for The Atlantic, Chicago Tribune, and Newsday.
“Hold on Sweetie till I can answer your question with a teleprompter.”
I want to be sensible and think he’s slipped into “my wife asked me to take out the trash and I don’t want to right now” mode but he’s done this before.
He sounds condescending. Stupid. Insulting.
Sweetie-Gate!
Here comes Hillary, how Obama is patronizing women and putting them down....
He should have just hugged her, and then ask his aides who she is and get her number, get her some job in White House and then assault her in the Oval Office when she comes to ask for help as her family is falling apart! Later on if she squeaks, hire Agents to slash her tires and kill her cat.
That’s how real men treat women!
Obama has two young daughters.....he probably calls them sweetie....force of habit.....
I don’t find “sweetie” condescending. Perhaps inappropriately-familiar, but event that’s a stretch.
Please do not tell me it is politically incorrect to call somebody “sweetie”. “Sweetie” is like calling a guy “pal”, or “friend”.
Are we now at the point where you can not refer to somebody by anything but their given name?
Just last week, a gate attendant for Southwest Air did me favor, and I told her she was a “sweetie”. I hope I did not insult her.
.....Bob
He never answered her question.
You used “sweetie” as an adjective, not a name/noun.
If Hillary were to call a male reporter “sweetie” or “hon” I do wonder what treatment it would get. Maybe it would remind the guy just how much he dislikes his mother-in-law?
Genuinely curious about that.
I’d give him a pass on this one. The guy has two little girls. Never mind he doesn’t know how many states in the union.
This is too ridiculous. What on earth is wrong with calling a woman “Sweetie?” That is a perfectly polite word and I have been called “sweetie” or “honey” or “darlin” many a time and never have been offended. Believe me there are a lot of words people use about women these days that I wish someone would wash all their mouths out with soap, but “sweetie?” It’s perfectly innocent.
To me the story is that he was meek and silly enough to apologize over that. Ugh!
I totally disagree. She is not some little girl. She is a grown woman doing her job and asked him a legitimate policy question. He never answered.
Actually, as a woman I can tell you there is a definitive answer to this question. The answer is,
It depends.
“Hang on Sloopy while I finish muh waffle.”
IMO, that is different as this woman did a favor for you and you were, in your way, thanking her. In this instance, this woman wanted an answer regarding his policies. Something we should want the media to do. Something no one is able to get out of this man without usually being called a racist just for asking. He couldn't or didn't want to answer her question so he brushed her off. Had he come back an answered her question, maybe I could let it slide.
Exactly. I don't like Obama's politics, but this is just plain silly.
If Bush had said something like that the NAG’s would have been all over him.
I am sure it would have gone over well if she’d responded, “no problem, ‘boy’.”
