CHONGQING, China - Chinese state media says more than 8,500 have died in Sichuan province alone from a massive earthquake.
The official Xinhua News Agency said that another 10,000 people were believed hurt in one of the province's counties after the 7.8-magnitude quake on Monday.
Nearly 900 students were trapped after their school collapsed about 60 miles from the quake's epicenter. Xinhua reported students also were buried under five other toppled schools.
The earthquake struck in the middle of the afternoon when classrooms and office towers were full.
The temblor was felt as far away as Pakistan, Vietnam and Thailand.
So what’s your point? Because nobody’s perfect therefore we’re all the same?
I think that was exactly what he was saying. “I love Big Brother!”
Yes, I am aware that that is one possible future:
Importing Sino-Fascism?PugetSoundSoldier: Our future does have a strong inter-dependency with China; its best if we recognize that now and manage the relationship with our own interests firmly in place.

But there is another possible future which we can be hoping for:

I assume the International Red Cross would be a start — so long as they don't charge the recipients of aid. Again, hope all you know and love are safe.
That was a hell of a quake.
Considering the number of people in the area, I would say 60k is a low number. 100k is more like it. It’s a terrible tragedy
This was a BIG earthquake.
I’m nervous here in LA.
id say god's REALLY pissed off
Never seen a disaster like this in Texas. I’d like to think it would be a little more orderly here everywhere else especially when shoerting looters is practically encouraged here.
And you an idiot or do you do imitations as theatre? Islam is the most dangerous threat to us over the next few decades. The Soviets could be counted to understand MAD. Muslim orcs with nukes will look forward to the retaliation in order to strike.

Muslims can't kill us by the hundreds of millions. The Russians can. Desire and capability are different things.
My point is that it’s human nature to put yourself, your family, and your country first. That shouldn’t be something feared - we all do it. Or is nationalism and being a xenophobe only OK when it’s the US that does it?
We should put those aside when it comes to figuring out how to balance power in the coming century.
Where do you think they get most of the nuclear materials and technology? It’s predominantly from the ex Soviet states.
For your information, there is no longer a Soviet Union - we can’t count on the Soviets, they don’t exist. Instead we have whack-jobs like Berdimuhammedow in Turkmenistan; Masimov in Kazakhstan, and many more. Putin is ruling Russia (nothing like the ex KGB taking over) and making more money than you can imagine off of GAZPROM.
Islam is definitely a problem, but they’re getting their supplies - and a goodly chunk of money - from Russia and the satellites around it. I’ll look at who’s equipping, training, and funding the troops not just who the troops are...
A majority of the Chinese I have spoken to have asserted gleefully that we deserved the 3000 dead we sustained on 9/11. I can't think of too many Americans who would cheer at the deaths of thousands of Chinese in a terror attack. Russia's not exactly been a great friend, and we were horrified at the Beslan attacks.
Not those with whom I have spoken. You write as if we are AT WAR with China. The people there are not 'the government'. Don't you think they want to be free of the oppression of Communism? Remember Tienanmen Square? Would you have that same courage?

The ridicule posted here at FR is essentially cheering about their tragedy. Do you think that to be a Conservative American means you aren't allowed to show compassion for humanity?
How awful. I can only hope that the death toll doesn’t rise much higher.
