An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).

Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

I agree the blame does not lay on the rescue workers but if you have seen the pictures of the school where the 900 children died. Why is it that all the other building are left standing while the school collapsed?

When I said that's horrible I was referring to the picture you posted not people yelling at the rescue workers. Frankly, in their grief, I think the parents should be excused. The rescue workers are the only ones they had to yell at.

And yes, it is horrible the 10 year old school collapsed while older buildings remained standing. Terrible tragedy.

Probably the first shake was the biggest. Afterquakes are usually smaller and gradually die out in a couple weeks. Other countries have offered whatever aid is needed, although China has plenty of resources if transportation is possible.

Other countries could fly over the terrain and drop tents and care packages down to the people.

And shovels and other equipment for survivors to help dig people out.

That poor woman. These pictures are very hard to look at.

Heartbreaking!

It would be gratifying to all concerned to see the USA and China thaw the tension between our countries despite this tragedy being the catalyst.

yeah normally quake dies out just like you said. but people here still worry about if there will come a sudden shake greater than the first wave.

A better comparison might be the 1811-1812 New Madrid, MO, earthquakes, which were of similar magnitude (probably an 8.0 on the biggest one) and cracked sidewalks in Washington, D.C.
