An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).
Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.
I did a bit of Googling for internet freedom in PRC. There are evidently some apps that can break through the Great Firewall. So we well may have seen some genuine honest to God Chinese posting; and not party hacks.
If this is indeed the case, I apologize for any offense that my posts brought to anyone on the thread.
Thank you.
I spanked a newbie on the Levin thread a while back. There’s way too little of that these days.
Why, back when I was a newbie, if I tried to post, I got kicked into next week; and I was a real sensitive child back then.
The chinese people that came to this forum were posting on the Tianya.cn website - read post 480
You’re welcome. Jim Robinson’s philosophy for this website has always been “give the poster the benefit of the doubt”. Sometimes that’s been hard for the mods to honor but we try as best as we can to follow that guideline.
AM
I’m in agony over these poor people. And the Burmese, too, Good God.
If you read the .cn thread, it’s kinda evident that we weren’t blocked, but now we may be.
OTOH, could FR handle 50 million hits if the (mistaken) word gets out over there that we have better news than they do?
However, none of the neoChis were begging us for news about the quake- notice that?
FR is not ‘banned’ in the PRC/CCP. Nor is it ‘banned’ in Singapore or Hong Kong. Nor in Shang Hai. Nor on Hainan Island. Nor in Macao. Nor in Kowloon.
Anything else I can help you with?
Laz - stick with comedy...its what you do best...;)
Thanks for the articles. That’s just sick. Several thousand in one factory alone, ugh. Has anyone heard more about the chemical leak?
Isn't that a Woody Allen movie?
Certainly the oddest thread I believe I have ever seen as far as newbies sprouting like toadstools. I AM interested in knowing from these new Freepers if they are using state approved pipelines and state approved software.
They gain instant credibility if the answer is no. I’ll wait here.
In case everybody on this thread doesn’t already know, Laz is a programmer including a decent security clearance with quite a bit of tenure here and is intensely protective of the forum - from trolls, foreign or domestic.
Lighten up Francis!
In fact were my expression not clear enough it was directed at the reporting from the 'official' news organ of China
there is a long body of work which supports my "tone"
the China government has never been one to honestly express their inabilities truthfully
.
Tenure is nice but it doesn’t give you the right to be hostile and in your face to new posters. I agree with the moderators on this one.
welcome huang qi...I hope your family is safe.
. you should be proud of your role in life
.
Truly- this is beyond my ability to comprehend.
I think I read that many TONS of liquid ammonia had escaped from a crushed chemical plant(s) and was poisoning the air for miles around as well.
In all our travels to China (and Russia), we have been able to access FreeRepublic from anywhere there. No problem.
Whole lotta paranoia goin’ on here.
