An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).

Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

FWIW, I’ll be pleasantly surprised if the Chinese government takes us up on our offer.

They've done it before.

For me, the big suprise would be if the U.S. didn't offer assistance.

I don’t think that our President should be using our money to help China.

With absolutely no statistics or history to back me up, I must say I'd rather spend millions now, to help innocents than millions later on weapons.

Helping others when you can is right. It may also be good politics.

1998 was the only time that springs to my mind at the moment. And I've always wondered just what Bubba sent over.

Amazing, isn’t it?

From your link:

~snip~

Are average Chinese Internet users afraid of the government’s Internet control system?

No. To begin with, not that many of them are even aware of it. The government discourages upfront discussion of the Great Firewall’s existence, what sites or search terms are forbidden, etc. Moreover, to the extent people are aware of it, indications are that they are hardly up in arms. My wife, Deborah Fallows, represents the Pew Internet project in China. In March of this year she released a study showing that a strong majority of Chinese Internet users welcomed the idea of controls over Web content and thought it was only natural that the government would do the controlling. This is a startling concept to many Westerners, but she explains the logic of it here.

Don't be. There's no reason for anyone to trust the Chinese government.

I don't trust them if they said the sky is blue!! I don't trust these new FR members on here either. They are in China and they happen to join an American Political site. Nope, Sorry, I don't buy it!

You are correct. Our agency has traced the internet connections of these three 'not government agents, no no no' back to the known IP of a special Intelligence Unit in the PRC.

We will assign a team, of course.

I see you know little about China's internet restriction..... Please, find anyone who knows Chinese and is not an agent by your judgement, then google "Taiwan" in Chinese( which would be 台湾). You will see how many Chinese have expressed their opinions, though most of which are stupid, I think. And I don't have unrestricted internet access. To think I am unmonitored just because I can post "Taiwan"? So naive....

You are a Chinese agent, sent to try to influence America's premier conservative website. We've been expecting you.

I thoughts exactly -- how did they happened to find a BANNED site like FR TODAY!

Don't worry. Our American team is mobilized.

Heck, tax dollars are spent for our agency to exist. About time you got your money's worth.

Maybe I am the third Chinese replied in this thread. (just knew Freerepublic by a link and registered this ID minutes before). Thanks you all of your blessing, really appreciating!

My parents also lives in Sichuan currently, the North-East of that province while I am in Dalian city now. They told me everything was ok so far.

Disastrously, the death toll has risen to 8533.

To whom it may concern, unless one of our newcomers gets political, let's drop the "Chinese agent" thing.

Prayers for the victims of this disaster.

No news from county at epicenter of China quake—Xinhua

BEIJING — There has been no news from the county in southwest China at the epicenter of a deadly earthquake, more than nine hours after the disaster struck on Monday, state press reported.

All lines of communication had been cut with Wenchuan county, which has a population of 112,000 people, Xinhua reported, adding rescue teams had been unable to reach there because the roads had been destroyed.

I believe that since most sites are ‘BANNED’ in the PRC, we can’t believe you. What I’d like to say is that I wish the PRC would become a democray - of course, I’d like the US to become it, too.

sir, do you really believe this site is restricted and can not accessed from China freely?

(the ‘agent’ used here might be a prejudice, you can ask your friends in China have a access test)

I don’t think most people in china especially young guy s like controls over Web content.
The problem is that you have to accept it if you live there.

Sad but true.
