An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).
Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.
I hope you will make it a point to build that which would sustain an earthquake. Many architects around the world are trying to achieve this, perhaps you will be the one.
Sometimes people come on here just to disrupt things and they have a new sign up date.As a result, the members get protective of this site.
I cann’t deny the situation you point out. It’s true ,but not always.I’m from China too, only a ordinary citizen.we got to know this site from famous portal website(Neteasy) in china mainland.
this is the URL

I come here just to feel how kind US people are.
I really thx all those who care us,esp victims in the earthquake.
I’m from China.I knew this site from www.eastday.com.
I was always moved by all the words.Thank you all.
I bet the chicoms finally blocked the FR. If they can get through the firewall like they said they could. I wish they would. Maybe they are afraid. This sucks.
Your posts frighten me. You seem so “pro government line”. There are reports of journalists being arrested for what? Posting pictures??? If this is the case, our friends in China being arrested, that would be worse for China than the disaster of murdering Tibetan priests. I hope this is not the case. We have “Bush bots” here meaning they are against anyone saying anything against the President but they are pathetic and useless people because they have no power. I hope you are one of those pathetic and useless people spouting the party line but I’m afraid you aren’t. The propaganda you spew has the stench of government protection. We have made many friends here and we would miss them if they were gone. I hope China finally made the decision that’s it’s ok to complain about the government. We do here all the time and it often appears we make no difference but at least we have the right to speak!!
Your post really makes me feel disgusting. All Chinese really appreciate the help and pray from other countries especially America. But here is not a place and now is not a time to ridicule our gov and show your noble.
So, that would mean those remaining are agents of the government attempting as usual to muzzle the voice of their people? Who knows, the ones previously responding could be in jail. Guess we’ll never know unless they are again given their voice. What’s the deal? They never said anything bad. I don’t get it.
I don’t know what you mean. If you see me in forum, I have a great sympathy for your people. The pics break my heart. I can ridicule any government I want to, including my own. Doesn’t mean I do not feel for your people.
I know.
Those are the only sites you can access for news?
You’re welcome. I didn’t originally post it but I have been unable to relocate the original to give that poster credit.
We have different opinion on what is most important for people because we have different history and culture.
It IS OK to complain about the government in China. You can find these comments in many big forums. The key is in which way and what results may occurIf someone choose the dangerous way which may cause chaos and more horror, then they should be punished. It's about law,not politics.
I really admire your rights and democracy. Not being that doesn't mean not like it.But for now we want to feed ourselves and make us wealthy ,which is more important than some ideology.Soviet Russia is a example which showed us what will happen if we have a immediate change, the country will collapse into chaos and people will suffer from civil war,we'll lose everything and hungry to death.I guess maybe you watched the film"Lord of War acted by Nicolas Cage, and more other films or books. Then maybe you will think deeply for us.
We are a developing country, some of us are fortunate to be rich now while many of us are still poor and struggle for living. We have good people and bad ones also just like any other country. For now most of us dont really hate any foreign country, that's against our culture.
I understand your feeling and please understand ours. Most thing in china are now done by necessary way,not by extreme or horrorable way.
There may exist some misunderstandings between us. I am trying to elaborate my attitudes, any mistakes please be kind to point it out.
Firstly I should state that I am just an undergraduate student, who beheld the sufferings of classmates around me (they either have relatives or friends in the sichuan, although our university does not locate there), and at the same time keeping deep attention at the proceeding of the subsequent rescue, so I truthfully understand what is going on in China.
In the official forum system of our university there is a BBS board where students can post political comments. At that site togother with other peers, we criticize the defects and faults of the current government, and praise its improvements and good deeds. I am neither “pro-gov’ nor “anti-gov”, instead I think and make comments with no bias. I got extremely anger at the corruptions of the current government, and always condemned at the low-effiency of government’ institutes. But at this time, I do find that government performs well in managing this disasters, although improvements are still in need.
At the public tianya bbs system there exist plenty of pictures about the scene of earthquake, such as the collapsed bulidings and injured or dead persons. I also posted some pictures from my classmates on the situation of sichuan. If it is true that to post pictures one may be arrested by the government, there will be more persons, but not just two, will be detained now. BTW, I fails to find to news on this kind of arrest, if you have information on it please feel free to tell me to facilitate me to judge the situation. You know the strength of one person is quite limited, so it is highly appreciated that if others can help me make clear of what really happens.
“I am chinese too, i was told by other cyber dude to log in here to see how friendly and sympathetic you Americans are towards those Chinese people currently suffering the unexpected earthquake. However, surprisingly, i have found that i , like some other Chinese people, are called the agent of sb and the only thing for us coming here is to influence you. I dont know what makes you think that way. we dont tend to influence anyone here, and we are not that influenctial. we only hope Americans could take look at the earthquake in human terms , not any more, thanks.”
Welcome to FreeRepublic.
Some you have run across here are hard hearted. Not all of us are. Some of us are greatly concerned about the humans in China who are suffering because of the earthquake.
Please stay and let us know what is happening so we can determine if there is some assistance we can give those in need.
Drought has showed before earthquake for several times in China history. But there is still not much research about this. Bedspring effect you mentioned is very interesting. Some earthquake scientists just use the statistic methodology to find the relationship, but I haven’t found any article to show how those drought related to earthquake. Bedspring effect maybe a good theory and it could be proved by the fact that earthquake would happen at the border of severe drought area.
I really wish I could believe you. I really do. There are many who were here who are no longer and it frightens us. Only you are left. You who may speak for your government. I’m not sure what to say. There is one person I fear for, well, probably two. We had such a great connection with the people there and I may be crazy but suddenly all are gone. What a shame, we will miss them.
We could understand if they disappeared one by one, losing interest. But all suddenly. The trust is gone.
