Volkswagen to produce 1-Liter car in 2010, should get over 200MPG

Although you can definitely pre-order an Aptera if you're okay with space-aged design, Volkswagen is hoping to provide another option for those looking for ridiculous MPG and a little bit of normalcy in construction. Okay, so maybe the 1-Liter isn't exactly standard fare -- with its plastic / magnesium shell and all-glass roof -- but at least it packs four whole wheels and an iconic VW badge, right? According to Motor Authority, the automaker will be producing said vehicle and pushing it to market as early as 2010, and while the minuscule engine will only take you to 75MPH, it will still seat two people -- one in front of the other, though -- and get around 235MPG. No word on a price or any of that good stuff, but we're hearing that they'll only be produced in "limited numbers" whenever they're launched.

He’s not talking about the same car. Aptera is the name of a start up company, this post is about a car that VW is going to make.

This is not the VW the article is about. Post #12 shows the VW.

The “1 litre” is meant as in “1 litre per 100 km”. The VW actually drove a few years ago as a concept car and made quite a fuss back then. Perhaps with the lower gas prices back then the car would not have been a big success and VW kept the plans in the drawer.

I’d buy it. It’s super-adorable! Good for commute, but not necessarily for schlepping the family around.

Don’t bother. One of my very few gripes about FR is that at the same time we complain about sand barons controlling our economy through oil, FReepers generally launch into the “my super hemi whatever will drive through that and not feel the bump” rant whenever anything that both preserves the personal freedom of automobiling and gets great gas mileage is announced.

Anyway speed isn’t a problem for drivers, only *relative* speed. Five cars bumper to bumper doing 110mph are ok until someone merges onto the freeway doing 40. Or likewise, 10 cars doing 60 are all happy as clams until one guy wants to blow through at 90. Maybe Kid NeverDroveBefore and Granny WhereDidIPutMyGlasses can’t manage 110, but they struggle to cope with 70mph too.

Also ‘need to’ is almost a curse word here as libs use it all over when they mean “I want to take away your rights.” For example, “You don’t need to own a semi-automatic rifle” or “Nobody needs more than $150k income per year.”

Huh, one liter what?

1,000 cc engine displacement. I owned an Austin Healy Sprite roadster with about that engine size when I was young and stupid. It accelerated just fine, and with today's modern materials for lighter weight would have been a little rocket! I'd love to beef up the suspension and shoehorn one of today's small V-6s into it, but it went to Sprite heaven many years ago!

The link below the photo from the article takes you to the other photos posted. Soooo, I wonder which one is correct? Will the real Aptera be the absolutly butt-ugly design or will it be the little grey go-cart design?

Ohhhhh no, you ain’t gonna rope me into your flamewar ;-)

That being said, my honeybear drives a basic wagon which has as much capacity as an SUV without all the bells and whistles and gets about 10-15 more MPG, and I tell you what, he’s got it GOING ON under the hood (if ya know what I mean and I’m sure you do! ;-)

Keep in mind that the true cost of fuel should include the dollars and lives it takes to defend the world’s access to oil. Also keep in mind that some of the money for that oil goes directly to acquire the bullets and explosives that are killing our troops right now, that funded the 9-11 terrorists, and that will fund whatever islamo-nazi attacks they’ve got planned in the future. So, while you have EVERY right to buy whatever you want, you should always give at least some thought to the consequences.

And, no, I’m not a “no blood for oil” whack-job, which has been hurled before. We did go to Iraq for oil, as oil flow is assured with Middle East stability, and Iraq was a threat to it. We need oil until we ween ourselves off of it - but continuing with the big cars won’t help.

As to ANWAR, it would help to drill there. But you have control over what you drive more than you have control over the enviro-whackos in Congress.

Ah, here it is. The article never states the name of the little grey go-cart (VW) and the link below their photo goes to the startup company, which is not VW.

VERY poor writing.
