Completely off topic but I don't childproof my house. I put up dangerous stuff but all the other is left down and the child must learn to leave it alone. My DIL and I disagree. She wants to put everything up high. I believe in teaching "look but don't touch"
Ha...to my DIL’s horror I had the grandkids drink out of our best crystal glasses....taught them how to make them sing.....she was lazy and wouldn’t say NO, or teach them rules.....so...SHE didn’t trust her own kids. I had rules, and was able to take risks with them, because I trusted that they would follow MY rules...and they did.
Here's another problem.
When my kids were three or four they wanted to know about Santa Claus. Was he real. We explained that Santa was a nice custom that had developed over the years, but that he was actually a nice man dressed in a Santa suit.
When our kids reached seven or eight, they complained because we made them think Santa was real when he wasn't.
What you say and what they perceive or remember are two different things.
When it's a life and death or serious injury issue, I would recommend against letting them make choices.
