A lot of those dogs are not trained. They're along just for the show and threat value. Cops that'll sic their untrained dog on you will also let you lay there on the street bleeding to death from a hole in your throat.
It's not worth the risk. However, as this case demonstrates, it may well be better in some towns to fire at the cops first, then the dog.
Don't worry, the lawyers taking this case are going to come down hard on the "trained dog" angle.

It costs about $6,000 per dog to train just the dog and then additional training with their human Police partner.
Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback Ben Roethlisburger has, thru his foundation, donated over a one hundred thousand dollars to local PD here in PA and in OH to help small, economically challenged areas have Police k-9s for their PDs. A question was posed, would the dog have mauled or killed Mr. Jackson, the answer given...no he (the dog) would 'stand down' when the command was given.
