While I consider the Tenor Solo of Beethoven's 9th the pinnacle of western music - music changes, and it's hard to turn away from brilliance in any form.

Alot of the people who used to carry the banner for classical music are moving on.

Classical music record labels are dying. The people who patronize symphonies and opera are contemptously referred to here on this forum as "elitist". Go ahead start a thread on the Van Halen drummer having a cold -- 500 replies guaranteed! Americans Idle thread has, what, 7,000 replies?! Shame.

The local classical music radiostation here, the one and only, down from two 20 years ago, won't even play complete pieces, symphonies or concertoes, only short movements, that as often as not are associated with some trashy movie melodramas. Here is the theme from the Julia Roberts movie, the announcer will say. Groovy!

That said, I'm afraid that Cakewalk/synthetizer QWERTY keyboard virtuosos of "techno" and "house music" are no Mozarts of the day.

mylife: I’m calling BS Classical music is alive and well and finds new audiences all the time AND modern rock and roll, all modern music.. is based on the “call and response” pattern of western classical composition

SeeSharp: You are right about new audiences for the old great composers, but where are the new great composers?

mylife:Well, as Bach Himself said...”Show me the money, then I will compose” L0L

This exchange is superb.

Nothing like Baroque in the morning. Classical music is great and its still heard and appreciated by bunches. But to call it, “serious music,” is not going to enhance its dissemination to the masses of cd-buyers.

As Ross points out, trivially but accurately, “when any self-respecting Hollywood archcriminal sets out to enslave mankind, he listens to a little classical music to get in the mood”.

No, they are moralizing and attempting to make a beautiful thing ugly by association. It's about the height of their artistic talent.

I have alway thought the violin should have had a premier spot in Rock rather than synthesizers. but the truth is that it is difficult to pay 50 people for textures and it is easier to pay 4 or five using modern instruments.

Is it the same? No
Is it based on the same aural ideas? Yes

If the record companies don’t figure out a way to make money in the age of Internet file sharing

To heck with the record companies. My sister, a classically trained mezzo soprano with several world tours under her belt as well as a stint as 'Tituba' in The Crucible at the Kennedy Center, has put out her own album and made it available on the digital music sites. She has had some sales of the CD, but gets downloads of her music all the time. She is paid royalties for the downloads. People use MP3 players; they want to quickly download what they want rather than buy the CD and copy it over to their player.

It's not just file sharing that's an issue; it's how the music is packaged (Granted, there may be less choice with a classical piece such as an opera than deciding which songs to put on a rock or country CD) People will pay for what they want. The record companies still haven't figured it out.

Some of it has to do with Fads. Mozart faced that. Puccini faced that.

There is still good music to be found that is based in classical comosition
