Did the idiot not know that the cemetery was there when he bought the farm? And why has the state not passed laws that declare cemeteries as not part of any buy? They should also pass a law that says that there is a required 12 foot road required for access to the cemetery and it should not be part of the buy (farm) either.

Guite, 62, of Greenwich, Conn., signed an option to buy the land in December _ contingent on being able to move the graves.Sounds like he hasn't actually bought it yet.
And if the seller is a member of the community, I'm sure his local stock has bottomed.
If I were the owner, I would have been writing a covenent in the deed protecting the cemetery; not writing contingent contracts to move it.
I know whereof I speak; we have a suspected grave site at a fallen in homestead on our property. One of these days, well have the it investigated by by a qualified archaeologist, and find out for sure.

I'm guessing that Vermont's law regarding graves and graveyards like this one is remarkably similar to the law in Indiana (which was modeled precisely on typical New England township laws).
Basically he can't touch it. Secondly he has to provide public access.
Guy tried to encroach on the access to a pioneer cemetary in Indiana my parents had restored. A complaint to the township trustee eventually resulted in his encroachment being moved, at his expense.
Still, it's likely the locals are unaware of it since this sort of request is rather rare ~ there being only a small, finite supply of genuine pukes around and about.

He has an option to buy the place, contingent on his being able to move the graves. If the ruckus continues, I doubt he’ll exercise the option.
