Howard Dean: Florida and Michigan Delegations Will Be Seated

Howard Dean appeared on the Daily Show and said definitively that the Michigan and Florida delegations will be seated. (H/t Scott Jacobs.) The video is here.

Representative quotes:

STEWART: If I were designing a plan to submarine your chances, and again, you don’t have to follow my advice here, I would take the state that was, let’s say crucial to the Republican election chances — lets, let’s call it Florida — and I would find a way to insult them. Maybe not seat them at the convention, that sort of thing. Then I would pick a Rust Belt state, maybe a Michigan, and say to them the same. Now you’ve got two states that are angry with you. Do you think that would be a good way?

DEAN: Well, we’re actually going to seat them at the convention.

STEWART: What?! This is news! Are you really going to do that?

DEAN: We’re going to find a way to seat them at the convention.

START: Are you really going to?

DEAN: Yeah.

STEWART: How — how can you do that when their results don’t count?

DEAN: Well, it’s a little hard, but we’re gonna do it.

. . . .

It’s gonna be quite a juggling act, but we’re gonna do it. You cannot have a Democratic convention without Florida and Michigan.

Stewart also asked Dean why Michigan and Florida don’t have to follow the rules. Dean replied: “They do. That’s why they lost their delegates.”

I don’t get it either.

Finally, Dean argued that the Democrats’ system is “still more democratic than the [system used by the] Republicans” — you know, the system where the voters choose all the delegates. Stewart let him get away with that one.

Watch it all, if you can stand it.

It took Jeremiah Wright to convince them

I believe Hillary has known about Wright for a long time. The timing of his exposure was a master stroke.

That will be in August, except the pictures will be in color. This news makes a DNC civil war much more likely.

Yep.

I think Rush Limbaugh may be in for an unpleasant surprise too. Operation Chaos just might backfire.

It won’t backfire. Operation Chaos does not change anything. It only exposes the problem. The Republican candidate was chosen by the media foisted in high speed fashion. This is the same thing only in slow motion.

I don’t see Hillary being the nominee no matter what. I think this’ll guarantee a repeat of ‘68, and it’s going to be really hard for the Dems to come back from that with either candidate.

Thanks for the reminder.

I guess my assumptions were wrong.

So, they’ll “seat” these delegates, but not let them vote?

Heck - Obama wasn’t even ON THE BALLOT in Michigan.

If Michigan's delegation is seated based on the results of its sham primary, it will be obvious that the DNC is going to make sure Hillary becomes the nominee. The fix will most certainly be in.

You think that McCain will beat the Clinton/Obama ticket?

If FL and MI are counted, Adios, Obama!

That's the plan, Stan. Dean has found a way to give the nomination to Hillary without having the SD's do it. My prediction is that they'll seat them all as uncommitted delegates and tell them to "vote their consciences."

If us in Michigan knew McCain was going to get the nod, all the Conservative voters in Michigan should have switched rank and voted uncommited for the Dems, and really made some Operation Chaos.

Limbaugh may be doing the country a huge favor, because open primaries may be dead meat in a lot of states after the dust settles, and open primaries are profoundly undemocratic.

This is huge. Given that Hillary won both states by pretty large margins, and both states have lots of delegates, this could put her over the top.

Look for the Obama camp to fight this tooth and nail.
