Howard Dean: Florida and Michigan Delegations Will Be Seated
Patterico ^ | 05/03/2008 | Patterico

Howard Dean appeared on the Daily Show and said definitively that the Michigan and Florida delegations will be seated. (H/t Scott Jacobs.) The video is here.

Representative quotes:

STEWART: If I were designing a plan to submarine your chances, and again, you don’t have to follow my advice here, I would take the state that was, let’s say crucial to the Republican election chances — lets, let’s call it Florida — and I would find a way to insult them. Maybe not seat them at the convention, that sort of thing. Then I would pick a Rust Belt state, maybe a Michigan, and say to them the same. Now you’ve got two states that are angry with you. Do you think that would be a good way?

DEAN: Well, we’re actually going to seat them at the convention.

STEWART: What?! This is news! Are you really going to do that?

DEAN: We’re going to find a way to seat them at the convention.

START: Are you really going to?

DEAN: Yeah.

STEWART: How — how can you do that when their results don’t count?

DEAN: Well, it’s a little hard, but we’re gonna do it.

. . . .

It’s gonna be quite a juggling act, but we’re gonna do it. You cannot have a Democratic convention without Florida and Michigan.

Stewart also asked Dean why Michigan and Florida don’t have to follow the rules. Dean replied: “They do. That’s why they lost their delegates.”

I don’t get it either.

Finally, Dean argued that the Democrats’ system is “still more democratic than the [system used by the] Republicans” — you know, the system where the voters choose all the delegates. Stewart let him get away with that one.

Watch it all, if you can stand it.

There’s an even more simple solution. Allow the delegates to be seated but simply don’t count their votes on the first ballot or maybe even the second ballot. Most delegates are pledged to a candidate for the first or second ballot after which they are free to vote their conscience. Follow this plan and both states are represented. They get to vote on everything else. And if it goes to the later rounds then there votes are counted.

BTW, if this were adopted, I suspect a lot of superdelegates would not vote on the first round.

How did Dean ever become a doctor with that kind of thinking?

There’s an even more simple solution.

But then the punshment becomes a reward if they are the tie-breaker. And of course, when have the Dems, who have had half delegates for forty+ years, been interested in simplicity... t'aint the liberal way!

“You really think McGovern light is going to get the nomination?”

First off, I think you have that backwards. Given both of their histories, I’d say McGovern is Obama Lite.

As for who eventually gets the Dim nomination, I think it’s a toss-up. The reason I say that is the Dims are faced with this decision: Vote for The Magic Mulatto and lose the general election (but be seen as everso enlightened by nominaing a “person of color”); or vote for Hillzilla and have a better chance of winning the general election but be seen as racist. That is a terrible quandary for the Dims: What is worse? Lose the election or be seen as a racist?

I used that word in conversation with my young adult sons the other day to describe Mariah Carey. They gasped. Snews to me, but apparently I may as well have been using the ‘N’ word. Since when?

Perhaps they were shocked that you thought she's a mulatto when she's actually a quadroon?

But what's funny is that Dean's statement is typical of liberal Democrat lying.

Democracy means...the people choose.

The Republican PEOPLE choose their delegates, those who will represent their constituents.

What 08 has proved is that the Democrat system is totalitarian. Here we've had all these primaries, Obama clearly on top. Yet, at the end of the day, the delegates can choose whomever each individual decides to choose. In short, in the Democrat primaries, the representatives the people choose can go directly against the wishes of the people.

This is “democracy” in the despotic, power-driven-statist's view of the term that only Democrats and Stalinists can explain with a straight face.

I don't see how the Dems can get out of this mess they've made for themselves. If they don't count the delegates from Florida and Michigan then they violate the law by not letting the votes that elected the delegates count.

On the other hand, by stating that those delegates wouldn't be counted, many people in those two states didn't vote because they were told their vote wouldn't count anyway. Hence, their potential votes were suppressed.

I see many lawsuits on the horizon.

“What is worse? Lose the election or be seen as a racist?”

Bill is the first black President and the MSM and the Clinton spin machine will make sure that the black community knows this. They will trot out the usual cast of characters in the black community who will say that it was the Republicans who brought up Obama’s race.

And you know what? They will get away with it because they are the Clinton’s.

The black vote will not vote for Hillary.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Dean will make sure that the delegate counts won't put Hillary over the top before he seats them and then claim it didn't matter anyway. They will not take it away from Obama or else the African-American communities will first have the riots then dump the DNC for their own party.

I dont get it. If they “lost their delegates”, how can they be seated to nominate?

If Hillary is nominated, Hillary will win the White House.

Clintons cheat.

It's far better for the country to have the democrats nominate a black man which would...

1) go a long way to erase the stain of racism from our 200-year history;

2) insure McCain's victory because matching up a war hero against a young black man won't even be a contest. It will be 1964 all over again, this time with a Republican (such as he is) on top.

Rush and his "Operation Chaos" are throwing the election to Hillary for some unspoken reason.

McCain will win the presidency.

NOT with my help.. McCain should WITHDRAW from the race and allow a REAL conservative to run in his place.. IMHO.... As entertraining as all this is.. I would be a lot more excited about this race if WE had a REAL conservative candidate...
