Microsoft withdraws offer for Yahoo: source
11 minutes ago
Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) has withdrawn its offer for Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O) and does not plan to go hostile, a person familiar with Microsoft's thinking said on Saturday.
Microsoft raised its offer by $5 billion to $33 a share, but Yahoo wanted $37 a share, this person said.
Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer has sent a letter to Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang withdrawing the offer, the person said.
Ballmer is faking it. He’s hoping some disgruntled Yahoo stock owners will sue the board for misconduct and then get then get Yahoo for what he first offered.
From what I have read, Ballmer hasn’t done all that well in picking companies to buy.

Microsoft is losing their confidence, just a few short years ago they would never have given up. Must be from all the abuse they’ve been taking lately over the third rate software coming out of Redmond. Office 2007?? What garbage. The suite released ten years earlier is even better.
Well this isn’t exactly a tiny upstart they are going after. Your personal bias aside MS still does very well at making money but this is/was a huge take over attempt that most companies couldnt even attempt to do.
Thankfully it wasn't Google they were shooting for, that imo is the only one worth using anyway and I'd hate to see Microsoft screw it up.
Their profits were down 10% from the last quarter in 2007 so while they're still making good money things aren't currently going as well as expected. Maybe that had something to do with their bailing out. Btw, Windows 2000 and XP are decent operating systems so I wouldn't call it bias on my part only constructive criticism. :)
Well, I for one and just thrilled that Yahoo didn’t sell. Reasonb being is that I play most of my free games on Yahoo..Most all other game sites charge to play games :-)
When it comes to games if Microsoft ever takes Freecell away then it’s definitely Linux for me.
I'm with you . Although I use GOOGLE almost exclusively for search, I like Yahoo! mail better than any other - best for detecting and automatically separating spam - as well as "My Yahoo!" = particularly the 'calendar' feature which I use like a personal secretary.
With my "secretary' to give me at least 4 notices for whatever times I set, on each appointment, birthdays, etc., I no longer miss anything nor worry about missing anything...even 'put out the garbage!' day
I'll hang onto XP as long as possible as other family members have had noting but trouble with Vista =
Speaking from the vantage point of someone who owns some MSFT, I would be delighted if this falls thru. The price they opened up with was about twice what the company was worth in my view.
Right on! Why should Yahoo get a huge bonus when they’re on their way down??
Give the cash pile to current Microsoft employees and incent them to compete better.
And Office 2007 rocks! Even if it takes some getting used to.
I'm actually glad to see the company diversifying because as an obvious monopoly with their desktop operating systems their only way of making money would be forced upgrades even sooner than they already are if they didn't branch out. With XP and 2000, which run perfectly for me and suit my personal needs and I'm sure millions of other users as well I see absolutely no reason to upgrade to Vista or the coming Windows 7 anytime soon.
But if one wants to be assured of continuous security updates then they have no choice right? Well I'm going to personally stay with XP as long as I can and also plan on exploring alternatives such as Linux and Macs.
XP is much better until you get 3+GB of RAM which is very cheap these days. You can get 4GB of RAM off Newegg for around $50-$60 after $30 rebates or straight up for around $70ish.
It probably depends on what third party software is installed. A lot of the newer applications are really becoming memory intensive. I only have a little more than a 1000mbs of ram and XP runs like a charm, but then I’m still happy with software that was purchased in the 1990s.
And those there with the Yahoo stock pandering to sell the company into the jaws of crapdom get the shaft and what they deserve.
If Yahoo stays independent, it will own Microshaft in a couple of years, and the fat guy from Microshaft knows it!
Finally there is some sense of justice in the universe.
