An audience member ambushed John McCain on Thursday at an otherwise placid town hall meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, with a surprise question about whether he had ever called his wife by an obscene term.

The man stood up and first said he wanted to ask the Arizona senator about a “mental health and mental health care” concern.

“Previously I had been married to a woman who was very verbally abusive to me,” the man said. He paused and asked, “Is it true that you called your wife a c***?”

The crowd booed, and McCain responded:

But, unlike a backhand, you can’t get arrested for it.

The KOS KIDS have been saying that for some time.

Earlier this week one of the teachers at my school who posts there and at Huffington Post came up to me and told me he had called his wife that name.

I will put odds on it that the person asking the question is a regular at one of those two sites, although DU is also a possiblity.

Why?

Because conservatives have this funny concept of “morals” that leftists do not have, and leftists hate and fear those who do.

But, in their thinking that is as tangled up as a pile of hangers, they’ve convinced themselves that those morals cannot be espoused by anyone who has ever failed to live up to them. That’s why their kids are so messed up as well - “I can’t tell Suzy not to do X, because I did it.”

Call me crazy, but I figure once you and your beloved reach that level of name-calling, it’s better for both to move on and trade in for newer, more agreeable, models.

I despise the “argument from arrogance” or the “proof by arrogant condescension” types, left and right.

It slips into the leftist worldview of the elite being the only ones qualified to express an opinion.

I can remember an Iowa whose Democrats were not run by absolute trash with a penchant for snotty street theater.

That was long ago, and far away.

When they can't make their points with logic (seldom) they resort to smut and personal attacks. A perfect example is the Statehouse races in recent years. (Talk to Danny Carroll for further details)

Thanks for the report. Was Cindy there?

No. And yes, he handled himself well. Very Well, much better than the transcript shows.

I saw the clip on Youtube earlier this morning. And was even more impressed with his 'grace under fire' than I was yesterday when it unfolded 10 feet away from me.

Just perusing that article and you know something, it reminds me of just how rotten this election is. I despise each and every candidate.

Good of McCain to just move on I suppose but I think he missed another great opportunity. I would have liked it more if he had said something like look how low our opponents have stooped to plant a sleazy question like that. But I suppose that would not have fit in with is reaching across the aisle, take the high road style of campaigning. He should stop being so nice to them. Like calling the guy “sir??”

I heard a talk by someone who knows McCain and he said McCain is very military. The “talker” worked in a general’s office and said many generals are taken to explosions of rage and then they are fine. He said McCain was the same way. McCain explodes and then he is good. I worked with several people who were this way. Many of them were Vietnam vets. My boss, who served in Nam, explained it this way:

“When you are in combat, you don’t have time to measure your words to see if someone’s feelings might get hurt” I’ll assume he was correct.

You know, if they didn’t claim “his face reddened”, you could imagine a couple in a good relationship having that conversation.

Sometimes older married couples do just jibe each other — it sounds awful, but it’s just fun to them.

Don’t know what happened in this instance.
