Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision today on Indiana’s voter identification case:

“The Supreme Court’s decision is disappointing. The Court’s decision today places obstacles to the fundamental rights of American citizens—especially the poor, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities—to participate in the electoral process. Requiring American citizens pay for underlying documents needed for an identification card and travel to distant motor vehicle locations for processing hinders—and diminishes—their right to vote.

“The right to vote is a foundation of our democracy. American citizens who wish to vote must be able to do so.”

Can't you see what this cruel and senseless UCCS Court ruling on Voter ID's means? It will now be possible to restrict many members of federally-protected minority groups to just 1 vote apiece.

Also means Dims will probably have to demolish those Magical Last Minute Vote-Finding and Manufacturing Machines That Put Losing Candidates Over the Top installed in all those districts.

Lighten up, Liz.

Tricky Dick Daley, Fast Eddie Rendell, Donna (Just get me Close) Brazile, et al, are sure to think of something! Although getting a good picture of a Loretta Sanchez virtual voter is a challenge, I am sure that the Democratic IT guys are up to it.

The Tennessee Fords also have some dy-no-mite concepts for getting over this hurdle with the dead voters. And for our latino friends, multiple, photo IDs have never been a problem. I am sure they will share the tricks of the trade with our "urban" friends, whose only problem is to present the correct ID at the appropriate precinct, which at the end of long day of voting can get confusing.

So are you and the others in this thread trying to tell me that the phrase The right of citizens of the United States to vote in Amendments XV, XIX, and XXVI doesn't actually mean the common, widely-accepted translation of those words to be that the citizens under the jurisdiction of the USCon have a right to vote? Pray tell, just what does that phrase mean then? Are you all a party to those who insist only militia members are entitled to keep and bear arms, regardless proper, comprehensible English as well? For it is just such argument that is propounded by them.

I posted the definition of the word entitle to deny those power-trip posters from coming along and claiming that because the definition of the word republic doesn't use the word *right* specifically, it cannot be claimed. Not so -- let's put our comprehension-caps on:

The United States of America is a representative republic, the definition of republic being that the citizen is entitled to vote, the definition of entitle being right, ergo.

The conjunction or was used specifically in the definition you challenge, not the conjunction and ... your argument about your wife is irrelevant to the point being made.

If we were entitled to vote, that right could not be taken away, even temporarily.

Rights are denied all the time in this country -- see citizen-criminals who are denied the right to liberty, or better yet, those citizen-criminals who have been deprived of the most basic, fundamental right of all, that being the right to life.

You and the others may post all the website-commentary you like, but I will continue on with what I was taught in Civics class thirty years ago.

No, it is not -- the voting referred to in the Constitution is not ONLY for electors for president, for cryin' out loud. Your representatives to the House and your senators are FEDERAL offices, not state. This idea that is trying to be propounded that the Constitution doesn't speak to federal elections is either disingenuous or willful ignorance -- the USCon can't refer to state elections, instruct on their whys and wherefores BY DESIGN.

Your "English" class is called "Language Arts." As you can plainly see, Grammar is optional in "Language Arts."

I took “Civics” my junior year of high school in 1962. The teacher was also the wrestling coach. You didn’t screw around in his class, you learned. 8^)

There’s a right to life? The Constitution clearly states you can be deprived of life by due process of law. If you had a right to life, you not be executed for any reason.

Is English your second language or what?

This is an asinine statement. Consider for one moment a 1000 pound man or women calling the fire department for transportation to his polling place?

Consider all prisoners in solitary confinement etc?

The word MUST can not be ignored.

How well I remember. In those days, I was a military citizen of a wealthy, powerful,English-speaking, and energy-independent country, which had already survived a 2 years of a disastrous, illegally elected President, who was showing us what you could do with public perceptions, if you owned the media.

It was a lesson wasted on the Republicans.

You, BTW, were a member of one of the last high school classes that actually received a an American citizen's education. The Great Dumbing-Down was just getting started; the movement that has turned Americans into the wheezing, obese, unkempt, illiterate slugs one sees in every Wal-Mart parking lot.

Gosh, thanks a bunch. Now I ‘m going to have a vision of a 280 lb. woman in stretch pants, a too-tight T-shirt, with dirty hair and wearing flip-flops, running through my head the rest of the day. A pox on you!

Seriously, I do recall reading that after the class of 1964, SAT scores began to fall and continued to do so until the mid 80’s. The blame has been largely placed on the influence of TV on kids born after 1947.

The only reason they didn't continue to fall, is that the very SATs themselves are now dumbed down. After 1964, those weasels in authority in school systems all over the country decided to let the inmates run their asylums. Younger faculty tended to identify with the students rather than the faculty and standards became less important than self-esteem.

Go into the attic and dredge up a 1950s Readers Digest. Then check one out at the supermarket. Both are written at what purports to be the 8th grade reading level. In 1950, today's Readers Digest would have been somewhere around the 4th grade level. Very few of today's HS teachers have enough subject matter under control to pass a state regents exam from the 1940s.

We are dumbed down. The 280# dirty-haired lady in the flip-flops and bare midriff tight tee with suggestive writing on it you saw at the Wal-Mart parking lot is probably your local $120,000/year high school principal. Sweat pants and all.
