A fair statement of the problem. Don’t worry though, help is on the way.

Freud was a coke head who thinks everyone shared his sexual fascination with their mothers.

His Id, Ego, Superego is extremely derivative to ancient greek stuff.

You know, one of the sad things is that some of the worst psychologists I have known, who have done the most damage to their clients, were “Christian Psychologists”. I am a Christian myself, and have been quite disturbed by some of the advice they have handed out.

Psychology is a poor excuse for a science.

However, psychology is now becoming a harder, experimental science thanks to the ability to look inside the brain. The older theories such as Freud or Jung, or even Maslow, are no longer the key paradigm of psychology.

Of course, there is a difference between research psychology and psychotherapy.

The most damaging psychologists are the ones who follow scientific materialism, which is the religion of the left. It includes “new age” concepts such as encouraging children to doubt their parents, setting family members against each other and encouraging divorce.

Many of these types of therapists, through subtle means, validate and encourage the self-destructive behavior of their patients in the name of “empowerment.” It can be quite damaging to patients who really need help but don’t get it from conventional psychology.

A sincere Christian approach is least likely to cause problems because it teaches true morality.

Excellent post. Atheism sneers at morality, and considers right and wrong merely as a matter of perspective, yet they dont’t want to be painted as having no morals. You can’t have it both ways.

“Atheism sneers at morality, and considers right and wrong merely as a matter of perspective,”

No it doesn’t.

You making that statement is like Bill Clinton saying he understands what life is like as a black man.

Yup. Just because someone is Christian doesn’t mean they are effective and helpful as psychologists.
I agree with you, we just can’t go across the board on this.

Lets look at the critics’ argument:

Some psycholgists and psychiatrists are not Christian.
All Christian psycholgists are good.
Therefore, all psychologists and psychiatrists who are NOT christian are not good.

Wow..that defies even basic logic.

It is very easy to criticize Freud if you have not studied his work completely. He has made some of the most major contributions to the study of the mind and behavior as well as even more importantly making it not ‘shameful” to have mental or emotional disorders.

Having said that, many others in the field have come along and made valid criticisms of his work and/or made progress beyond what he started.

"...a difference between research psychology and psychotherapy..."

--like the difference between physics and engineering.  One disparages the other for lacking scientific rigor, and the other demands relevance to everyday life.

'...some of the worst psychologists I have known, who have done the most damage to their clients, were “Christian Psychologists"...'

Personal anecdote aside, keep in mind that any country with atheism as the religion of state has perverted the study of psychology to unspeakable ends.  The only countries where the study has provided any benefit has been those where people believe in God.

I admit my observation is totally anecdotal and limited.

In the cases I have seen a big part of the problem is that the psychologists were, frankly, much less skilled. It seemed very similar to what I have seen in “Christian Rock” (in which I do have a great deal of first hand experience) where the less skilled practitioners pay lip service to the “Christian” route because it is easier to get started and could get jobs in established practices that were not available to them in a secular practice.

It has also been a personal observation that too many patients stop doing their homework once they hear the word “Christian” and don’t find out if the counselor they have chosen really has the experience, specialization and training to deal with their specific problems.

Of course a big part of the problem is that there are so many degrees of training and education that all are allowed to call themselves mental health professionals.
