Iran demands Azerbaijan release Russian nuclear shipment
Jerusalem Post ^ | Apr 27, 2008

Iran has demanded that Azerbaijan deliver a Russian shipment of nuclear equipment that it blocked at its border with Iran almost three weeks ago.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini says his country has asked the Azerbaijani ambassador in Iran to get his government to deliver the shipment as soon as possible. He spoke Sunday at his weekly press briefing.

The shipment is headed to a nuclear reactor the Russians have helped build in the southern Iranian port city of Bushehr.

Azerbaijan has said it was seeking more information about the shipment due to fears that it might violate any of the three sets of UN Security Council sanctions imposed on Iran over its failure to halt uranium enrichment.

This is fascinating. I am not at all familiar with the state of affairs between Azerbaijan and Iran or the geopolitical perspective the Azerbajaijanis espouse.

Unfortunately, at the end of the day, Iran will have its shipment one way or another, I am afraid.

You have drawn an image for me that speaks volumes, one of joy and rapture, that I otherwise would have never been privy to.

Thank you so much!

I want to add that I fervently hope that the premise the image conjures up indeed comes to fruition.

No question about it, whoever desires peace, let him prepare for war.

Oh, I’m sure an energy poor country like Iran really needs nuclear power for civilian consumption and that’s all this is about. /obvious sarcasm tag

Interesting.
Azerbaijan borders Iran (Persia) on the North and the Azeri people make up 90.6% of the population with 90.3% speaking Azerbaijani (Azeri).

But right next door in Iran only 51% are ethnic Persians with Persian and Persian speaking dialects making up 58% of languages. And 24% of 'Iranians' are ethnic Azeri.

Considering that the Persian Empire was one of the largest and OLDEST civilizations ("the first historic people") going back to 'pre history' -- 3,000 BC -- this is a 'wow', what the heck happened to all the 'ethnic Persians'?

Granted, Alexander the Great killed off a lot of 'Persians' against Darius III, but that wasn't until 331 BC. So where'd they all go? And how did the Azeri survive almost intact all these millennium while 49% of the Persians disappeared.

Could there be another 'Lost Tribe' out there - this one wandering the globe weaving Persian Rugs as they go. (/s)

The "remaining 49%" of Persians never "went" anywhere. They simply absorbed (without assimilating) several large ethic minorities (including Armenians, Azeris, and even Arabs). BTW, the are ethnic Farsi-speaking "Persians" in Afghanistan.
