Jail Overcrowded with Illegals (South Texas)
KRGV ^ | April 24, 2008

MERCEDES - Deputies arrested two illegals in connection with a Mercedes murder.

Jaime Ibarra and Juan Pineda are each being held on a million dollar bond. They're accused of killing Saul Garmendia. Sheriff Lupe Trevino says Pineda and the victim were fighting over a woman.

The two suspects are now in county jail. The sheriff says they're the latest example of rising crime rate involving illegals. And he says it's creating an overcrowding problem in his jail.

"I've got between 29 to 31 percent illegal immigrants in my county jail that we're holding on state charges," Trevino explains.

He's seen a jump of about 10 percent over the past two years. And he tells us it's costing taxpayers and the county money.

"It's costing you, the taxpayer, $45 a day per person to house illegal immigrants here in the county jail," the sheriff says.

Trevino adds he's not sure if the jump in crime is because the department is getting better at catching illegals committing crimes or more illegals are crossing our borders.

But he says, "It doesn't make a difference, because my jail is still overcrowded with illegal immigrants."

The sheriff says the cost of the illegals in the jail population costs between three and four million dollars a year.

NEWSCHANNEL 5 learned not much can be done, since the illegals committed the crimes in the Valley.

The sheriff also says in addition to the state prisoners housed in the county jail, the federal government keeps some of its illegals there.

The county does get a reimbursed from the federal government for that. But we're told it's not enough to cover the costs.

Our arrest log looks like this everyday, most days it is much worse.

Of course there is never any mention by the police, or our paper, of who is illegal and who isn’t.

I suspect it is the latter. We now have the three remaining Presidential candidates all supporting amnesty. Those contemplating entering illegally will do so now so they can take advantage of the next amnesty. The landrush is on.

"We now have the three remaining Presidential candidates all supporting amnesty. "

SEN. JOHN MCCAIN (R), ARIZONA: “ My friends, I’ll offer anybody here $50 an hour if you’ll go pick lettuce in Yuma this season and pick for whole season. So — OK? Sign up. OK. When you sign up — you sign up, and you’ll be there for the whole season. The whole season, OK? Not just one day. Because you can’t do it, my friend. Sign up.”

I could do in my younger days before my back surgery, Mr. McCain. I did plenty of jobs like that in the Texas summer to raise money for college. Now, given the choice of working hard and having self-esteem or accepting charity from the guv’ment, the welfare class of this country does the latter.

"Deputies arrested two illegals..."

What is it with "illegals?" I thought they were "UNDOCUMENTED."

So rent a fleet of busses, (fleet = 3 if absolutely necessary), stuff them in, and I do mean stuff, and slowly drive them home. Provide a stretch limo to follow them to drive the drivers home, with all the amenities and a remote controlled triger to ignite the dyno under the gas tanks of the busses. That last part prevents them from coming back and incourages others to think twice and then a third time before risking the trip north. Just a thought.

Indeed. Heck, my back is GONE, and I still do work like that!

Unlike McCain, who probably hires alien cheap labor for his.

Too true crusty.
I’ve said and believe we should end ALL welfare unless you have a REAL physical or mental malady.
Get off you ass and work and earn your way or starve.
Put down the video game, turn off the t.v. and get off your spoiled lazy dead butt and go out and work.

What a waste of taxpayer funds. Can’t this be handled by Animal Control?

I could do it as a summer job, and if I lived near such an opportunity, I would. As it is, in my area I couldn’t make that kind of money per hour fixing computers or installing ‘entertainment systems’! That said, my summer will probably consist of a job at the local mall, or anything, as long as it’s not food service (just cause I’m so horrible at that), and ‘keep people from dying’ isn’t a part of the job description.

Sure, like McCain is really going to guarantee that $50/hr wage for the entire season? Not just one day for the photo ops? Nope, I didn’t think so. If he was telling the truth, he’d have applicants lined up and around the corner. If this an indication of the lies he’s going to be telling in the WH, I don’t want him.
