DENVER A Colorado legislator known for kicking a photographer was ordered to leave the podium of the state House of Representatives on Monday because he called Mexican workers "illiterate peasants."
State Rep. Douglas Bruce, who has a history of provoking controversy, made the comment during debate on a bill that would allow the state to help immigrant workers get temporary federal visas. The measure is intended to ease a shortage of farm workers in the state.
"I would like to have the opportunity to state at the microphone why I don't think we need 5,000 more illiterate peasants in Colorado," Bruce said.
His outburst drew an audible gasp from the House.
"How dare you," said state Rep. Kathleen Curry, a Democrat who was serving as chairwoman during the debate. She told the Republican lawmaker he was no longer recognized to speak.

Will these people ever accept that we are in a capitalistic society, not a planned, centralized communist one? Do they think there should be some agency that oversees employment and guarantees that companies can find the help they need at whatever price they want to pay?
There is NEVER a shortage of workers. Sometimes there is a shortage of employers willing to pay the market rate for a certain occupation.
Obviously there are some exceptions, such as specialized occupations, but when it comes to unskilled or low-skilled workers there is never a shortage.
The farmers need to get used to the idea of mechanization instead of just hiring low-skilled workers to pick vegetables. That’s what they have done in Australia.
Bruce is very conservative and is quite outspoken when he opens his mouth on issues.
There.
Fixed It!
I imiagine on May 6, NC will have at least an additional 200,000 'new' (illegal voters.
Why is he tactless?
On the surface, it sounds that way at first hearing.
But after thinking about it for about 5 seconds; there is nothing wrong with what he said.
We used to apply strict filters on who was allowed the privilege of entering our country.

They’re discussing the matter on Peter Boyle’s right now. Some of lib reactions are quite hilarious.
When KFI’s John & Ken referred to the illegals as our importing “Mexican peasant culture”, it changed my attitude. We don’t get the classy, rich Mexicans (the type who used to come to Houston to shop at the Galleria), it is the peasants who are coming here. Sorry that lady can’t handle the truth!
Illiterate
1. unable to read and write: an illiterate group.
2. having or demonstrating very little or no education.
3. showing lack of culture, esp. in language and literature.
Peasant
1. a member of a class of persons, as in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, who are small farmers or farm laborers of low social rank.
2. a coarse, unsophisticated, boorish, uneducated person of little financial means.
Wheres the issue here.
Beside he only said he didnt want 5000 MORE-who knows how he feels about the ones already there....lol
BTW WTF is this ‘no longer recognized’ crap? It would seem the rights of illegal immigrants are trumping the right to free speech here,no?
Hee hee hee hee! It is always best to be correct. He should have gone further and said illiterate CRIMINAL peasants.
Tactless as in purposeful to get a rise in a supposedly formal meeting. Content is dead on.
Two things need to happen first, stop illegals, and food prices need to rise to meet the higher costs. I'm in favor of both.
Mike Rosen had a segment on it yesterday as well. It will be interesting to see if Bruce survives the primary challenge this year.
Boyle’s is pounding on them right now.
Thanks, I turned him on to listen. I usually listen to Bill Bennett in the early morning until seven.
