Daley wants gun crackdown near schools, parks [Chicago's Mayor]
Chicago Tribune ^ | April 16, 2008 | Dan Mihalopoulos

Posted on 04/16/2008 6:47:19 PM PDT by HoosierHawk

Mayor Richard Daley announced Wednesday he would introduce an ordinance to guarantee jail time for anyone convicted of carrying an unregistered weapon within 1,000 feet of a school, park, courthouse or public housing development.

---snip---

"Year after year, we have presented aggressive gun reform legislation in Springfield and Washington DC. I've said this time and time again. I firmly believe the gun industry is bigger than all the governments combined," Daley said. "It's the only institution that is fully protected by federal law, that you cannot sue them or you can’t even question them. You look at the power of the gun industry – it is enormous in the United States, both local, state and nationally, and internationally as well."

Blame the guns!!!!
Don’t blame “no fathers” due to welfare and lousy upbringings.
Don’t blame the cheapening of life like abortion.
Don’t blame schools that don’t force students to treat others with respect.
Don’t blame schools that indoctrinate little skulls full of mush into thinking that the whole world revolves around them.

Shhh...Don't tell him about the 2nd Amendment.

We don't currently have any 2A rights, but hopefully SCOTUS will restore them thru reaffirmation.

Bob Levy, one of the attorneys representing Dick Heller in D.C. v. Heller (and the man largely responsible for getting it started in the first place), said that Chicago will probably be the next target if he prevails against the D.C. gun ban.

This is the same scumbag mayor who, in the dark of night, sent a fleet of bulldozers to plow giant X’s in the runaways at Meigs Field, an historic airport on Lake Michigan, because his wife wanted a park at that location.

The bullcrap that spews from this guy’s mouth has absolutely no limits.

Zoning laws exist only because politicians have learned that they can fool the sheeple into thinking they're safer because of these laws. It matters not whether the law addresses guns, or drugs, or registered [sex] offenders... those intent upon breaking the law in much bigger ways with much stiffer penalties aren't going to be impeded in the least by "zoning laws."

This only plays to the suckers -- some of whom who will learn, to their sorrow, the error of believing a politician's promise that "this will make you (or your children) safer."

From what I read on FR, in this regard way too many FReepers are potential suckers.

Shhh...Don't tell him about the 2nd Amendment.

What Second Amendment? Y'all sold that one down the river in 1968 with the GCA act, applied ex post facto without due process. A precedent that is being applied to other "rights" you thought you had.

Fight for it, we have a chance. But it's an uphill battle because a lot of conservatives thought "this isn't our battle."

For want of a nail...

That’s right! The guns are to blame. Didn’t you see them jump off the walls and fly outside and shoot up the neighborhood! /sarc

We can only hope and pray the gun rights attorneys go after Chicago’s handgun ban. After that, the Castle Doctrine! Then maybe crime will go down (Probably not in my lifetime).

Kids today have it easy.

We used to have to PAY for our guns and drugs.

That's why kids today have no values.

Free guns and drugs indeed.

Mayor Daley is mad because criminals some elected officials in Chicago are not paying his corruption tax to conceal carry firearms.

Daley, at the end of all corrupt money trails in Chicago.

Mayor Richard Daley announced Wednesday he would introduce an ordinance to guarantee jail time for anyone convicted of carrying an unregistered weapon within 1,000 feet of a school, park, courthouse or public housing development.

Well that ought to do the trick, I'm sure no criminal would dare violate a law against carrying guns.(sarc)

Are people like Daley really dumb enough to think that any law they can pass will keep bad guys from having guns? Criminals are by definition people who break laws, and gun laws aren't any more sacred to them than laws against any other crime.

That's why no gun laws make any sense, they are totally worthless for anything other than to add another year or two to the criminals sentence if he's caught. And even that is usually bargained away by the prosecutors in the pretrial negotiations.

We just need the Chicago cougars to eat a kid or two at the schools or parks and he may change his tune.

Since Chicago already has an almost firearms-free zone, this seems a bit redundant. It is sad that there are so many people who think a law against guns will stop someone where the law against murder would not.

These zones themselves are unlawful when they prohibit otherwise lawful possession and transportation. Just take a city map and draw a 1000 foot (~1/5 of a mile) circle around every qualifying building, and you will find it impossible to travel in the city without violating at least one zone.

Dick Daley seems to think law-abiding gun owners are the problem. Chicago has the most restrictive anti-gun laws on the books in the nation. Yet that hasn't reduced crime and Daley's solution is tightening the laws which of course will never affect the criminal element.

From the article: "Mayor Richard Daley announced Wednesday he would introduce an ordinance to guarantee jail time for anyone convicted of carrying an unregistered weapon within 1,000 feet of a school, park, courthouse or public housing development. "

In a related announcement, Mayor Daley announces that registrations will no longer be accepted for any weapons and that present registrations will be cancelled.

Or did I get Chicago mixed up with Washington,DC?
