Economic Challenges for Climate Change Policy ("A consensus continues to grow...")
Council on Foreign Relations ^ | 4/14/08 | Toni Johnson

A consensus continues to grow among world leaders that climate change poses a threat to the global economy. The Bush administration has been reluctant to impose mandatory greenhouse-gas curbs on U.S. industries. But the front-running 2008 presidential candidates and the Democratic majority in Congress say they are committed to enacting mandates to curb greenhouse gases. For the next U.S. president and Congress, finding an approach that manages to cut greenhouse gases without doing serious harm to the U.S. economy remains a top concern. Amid a slumping U.S. economy, any legislation that imposes higher energy costs will be particularly difficult to negotiate. However, many lawmakers say climate-change policy also holds economic opportunities, including creating jobs and employing new green technologies. Taking the Plunge

Numerous reports and studies, notably the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, have concluded that climate change is real and is being driven primarily by the emissions of man-made greenhouse gases. A number of projections suggest it could have significant implications for the global economy.

"...report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, have concluded that climate change is real and is being driven primarily by the emissions of man-made greenhouse gases."

From my understanding not one single IPCC report concludes that this global warming hoax is being driven by man-made CO2.

A consensus continues to grow among world leaders that climate change poses a threat to the global economy.

Er, only if "world leaders" attempt to do something about it.....

And what are the scientific qualifications of these “world leaders”?? SCIENCE AND CONSENSUS ARE ANTITHETIC. Scientific LAWS are not decided by popular vote, they’re proven or disproven, frequently they’re argued BITTERLY for YEARS in scientific journals, especially if test results cannot be repeated...and the problem with “man-made climate change” is that NO SCIENTIFIC TEST(S) exist to prove or disprove what will therefore always be a THEORY.

There is already solid evidence that panic over the "predictions" of climate change is wreaking economic havoc. The price of food is soaring, and food riots are becoming commonplace -- all due to the mad rush to produce biofuels out of food.

John McCain disappoints me with his buy-in on AGW. But his advisors point out that he is not for mandatory cap-and-trade. He does insist that China and India be part of any future Climate Agreement.

Yes, we Freepers mostly agree that this is bad science, but for many people it's real. The USA will have to be involved in future multi-country meetings on this issue, but just like with Kyoto, the majority of the Senate will not sign away our prosperity over the ever-weakening evidence of Global Warming.

When people are starving to death, the response is: let em drive with biofuels.

A real threat, islamist terrorists, is a ploy to steal our freedom. A made up threat, global warming, is so dangerous we should voluntarily turn over our freedom. The sky is green in a liberal’s world.

My first thought was exactly the same as The Great One’s:

The politicians must know that the eternal climate pendulum has already swung the other way and are desperately scrambling to take credit for it.
