Obama Explains Why Some Small Town Pennsylvanians are "Bitter" [and cling to guns and religion!]
ABC News ^ | 4/11/07 | Jake Tapper

Posted on 04/11/2008 4:23:18 PM PDT by freespirited

The Huffington Post's Mayhill Fowler reports that, at that same San Francisco fundraiser where Obama revealed his previously unknown college sojourn to Pakistan, the junior senator from Illinois seemed to try to get inside the mind of small towners in Pennsylvania, with a dose of sociology and a dollop of dime-store psychology.

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama said. "And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

It seems to me that this comment could be interpreted fairly easily as dismissing people who hold views on guns, or religion, or immigration, or trade because they believe in those views -- and not because they're "bitter" or lashing back at a system that has discarded them.

"Wow, what a choice we have this year, a communist, a socialist and a fellow traveler."

After I finished ROFLOL at your comment, I decided it definitely deserves repeating because of the truth of it.

A question for you - are you planning to update to "depressed in 08" post election?

Let us tally the scorecard:

John Kerry - a joke.

Al Gore - a joke.

Willie J. Clinton - a joke.

Mike Dukakis - a joke.

Walter Mondale - a joke.

Do you see my point? Obama is a typical Dim nominee.

What do we expect?

The penultimate black candidate? There will be exactly one more before Armageddon?

Maybe he meant "ultimate"?

With the alleged Republican also mentally unhinged. Thinking about those three makes me sick.

Very interesting! I have always suspected there was something fishy about Obama’a fundraising. It has always seemed odd to me that he has so many more doners than Hillary, but they are practically even in their DemonRat support. I wish someone in the news industry would conduct a full fledged investigation.

Paging Sean Hannity...

You know...The damaging part about this, is not that he meant to be huerful, or he intended to be derogatory..the damaging part of his description, is the fact that this is how he sees, and thinks about americans who donn’t live in big city rat warrens of Liberalism. It is eye opening to see that he thinks of small town America as soomehow being natural preserves for americas “not too bright” relatives. Gun totin, bible thumpin, xenophobes, who are somehow clueless, that the products of their labors, are intrinsically tied to international trade.

We are to be pityied.

What ignotant Liberal snobbery. More of the Liberal “Soft Bigotry”.

"Is there ONE person out there who thinks this guy can be elected president of these United States?"

I don't. But it's critical he gets the nomination over Hillary, or he will rise again. This way, we can defeat both of them this time around.

Yes, this *is* a “Macacca Moment”.

He might as well have said: “ Man! Those small town Honkies aren’t smart enough to realize that liberal serfdom is much better than doing things for themselves...until I whip out my Barry White voice on ‘em!”

I seriously doubt it. Nothing made me more depressed than 06. The Bolshecrat party should have been destroyed that year. Mark Foley did nothing compared what Pelosi has done to us. What it proved to me was that the slime stream media was not as dead as I thought and people are idiots. The movie "Idiotcracy" is looking more prophetic.

their jobs have been “gone for 25 years”

My thought was, if there were no jobs for 25 years, than no sympathy from me for not going to where the jobs are.

Obama.....you are so wrong.

Being a Pennsylvanian, born and bred, I can tell you that your reality is alien to true reality.

Besides, Obama, PA's just full of us "typical White people". You'll never understand us.

I listened to it at the link in the Huffington Post article. The audio’s really bad, just barely understandable. It would be great if Rush had it cleaned up for his Monday broadcast and played it then.

I knew from the start the Republicans would not field someone that I would be looking forward to voting for. I was just hoping the Democrats would nominate someone who I would just love to vote against and it looks like they are with this Obama. I will be holding my nose when I vote for McCain but I will feel good about voting against Obama.

You make a good point. Read the whole Huffington Post article. Its author was obviously sympathetic to Obama, basically agreeing with all he said and totally clueless to the real impact of his speech on the PA electorate and the general electorate.. She posted the large excerpt from the speech along with a transcript apparently to show his wisdom. Not once did she see the hostility, racism, and condescension. It’s as though a Communist admirer or Stalin’s posted a full description of the Ukraine mass starvation/murder and praised Uncle Joe for it.

NE PA is rapidly becoming a haven for NJ transplants and they’re bringing all their ills with them.

The mindset: Sell the postage stamp house in north Jersey and buy a mansion in NE PA. Commute back to Jersey or NYC and leave your kids to rampage around the neighborhood.

That bears repeating as well.
