Mayhill Fowler has more from Obama's remarks at a San Francisco fundraiser Sunday, and they include an attempt to explain the resentment in small-town Pennsylvania that won't be appreciated by some of the people whose votes Obama's seeking:
You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them...And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.
And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
That's pretty broad list of things to explain with job loss.
A friend sent it in an email...I thought it was cute.
But I haven't listened.
ROFLMAO!! Well the leftie “citizen-journalist” is either a Hillary plant or else unusually conscientious for a leftist, because this story could do a lot of damage to Snobama.... as in ‘Snob-ama’ as Michelle Malkin is calling him.
What a revealing insight into the snooty mentality of better-than-we-are leftists like the Obamas and the Jon Carys and Albores...... not to mention the Clintonistas, although they are usually better at hiding their disdain for the masses....
Here’s an update from Politico — Obama’s campaign is trying to change the subject:

McCain camp hammers Obama on small town comments
The McCain campaign, finding a gift in its lap, tees off on the eye-opening comments by Barack Obama from a fundraiser last week in San Francisco (of all places).
Asked to respond, McCain adviser Steve Schmidt called it a “remarkable statement and extremely revealing.”
“It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking,” Schmidt said. “It is hard to imagine someone running for president who is more out of touch with average Americans.”
Said Obama, as recorded by a HuffPost writer in attendance:
“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them,” Obama said. “And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
The Republicans are itching to play the elitism card against Obama, and these comments just made that task a whole lot easier.
UPDATE: Obama’s camp, not confirming or even mentioning their candidate’s comments, issues a statement from spokesman Tommy Vietor:
“Senator Obama has said many times in this campaign that Americans are understandably upset with their leaders in Washington for saying anything to win elections while failing to stand up to the special interests and fight for an economic agenda that will bring jobs and opportunity back to struggling communities. And if John McCain wants a debate about who’s out of touch with the American people, we can start by talking about the tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans that he once said offended his conscience but now wants to make permanent,
There's absolutely nothing wrong with clinging to guns or religion.
Now Roland Martin is on the Lou Dobbs show, and he is also agreeing with Obama`s inference that small town whites are nothing but racist, gun-toting, religious fanatics. And he just said Obama should not apologize.
I don’t think an audio quote exists. He said it to the NYT.
CampaignSpot reported it today. It happened last year.

Correct you are!
I think a lot of politicians think this way.
However most are not stupid enough to say how they really feel about middle America.
“ROFLMAO!! Well the leftie citizen-journalist is either a Hillary plant or else unusually conscientious for a leftist, because this story could do a lot of damage to Snobama.... as in Snob-ama as Michelle Malkin is calling him.”
She did sound a little conflicted in the interview. She said she did`nt want to hurt his campaign, but thought his comments were important enough to put out. But by the tone of her voice, I got the impression she was second guessing her decision.
Update on the HuffPo citizen journalist. It looks like she sat on the tape for one or two days before releasing it.
That’s just what we need to see, some prominent blacks firmly defending Snob-ama’s dissing of all of small-town America’s “typical white people” as cranky, bigoted, xenophobic, gun-toting, neanderthals driving pick-up trucks with Confederate flags — you know, the people that Howie Dean said he’d really like the Demagogues to be able to attract.
I am so glad that twit on CNN told us all the truth about small town bitterness. And to think...I only have faith in God and respect gun rights because I lost my job. Wait until my boss hears about this.
Was this his Dean Scream?
You sure he wasn’t just talking about TYPICAL WHITEY? I mean is he trying to explain bigotry this way? This guy is dangerous.
Its his attack on Conservatives, guns, religion, he is saying that because people lost factory jobs they have embraced conservative ideals and have become bigots...
It was only a matter of time... I have been saying it for 6 months now... He is going to push progressive liberalism hard left into America Mainstream and Conservatives will be equated to, intolerant, homophobic, racists and bigots... and they keep on suckin up the kool-aid
Of course that’s what he’s talking about. Small town folk = white rednecks. That’s how they think. That’s how they talk. The last true americans are those narrow minded gun toting white trash church goers in small town america. Any communist worth his salt knows these are the last people left to threaten him and his ideology.
LOL that is amazingly accurate...
The Clinton News Network just did a full hour on this. The smell of popcorn is mingling with the smell of crisp toast.
Hussein seems like he is afraid to walk around those small towns with guns, American flags, and Churches.
Sort of like a Commie Vampire.
