Alleged Vienna embassy bomber acquitted (Outrageous!)

Vienna - A Vienna court on Tuesday acquitted a man who was accused of an attempt to smuggle explosives into the US embassy last year of having planned a terrorist act. Asim C, a 42-year-old Bosnian man, was found not guilty of attempting to commit a crime using explosives.

On October 1, 2007, Asim C had tried to gain access to the US embassy carrying a backpack filled with hand grenades, fuses and nails, but fled and abandoned his bag when he was stopped as he went through metal detectors at the entrance.

The man was found guilty of lesser charges of import and ownership of banned weapons, falsification of documents and libel. He was sentenced to 15 months without probation.

During the trial, Asim C told Vienna's provincial court he wanted to be a US informer and "hand over the dangerous substances" to the US authorities, as he had "faith in the United States, because they fight terrorism."

I don't know anything more about this case than what is in the article but I can't believe the jury bought that story.

I would like to read more on this. If the explosives weren't wired, and depending on other evidence, he may have been telling the truth (he was turning it in wanting to inform..)
..waiting for all the court docs to be released..

Fuses, grenades - consistent with his story. It's the nails that would be the sticking point with me. Then again, I suppose nails will be outlawed in several European countries in the coming years so maybe he was just ahead of the curve - did he have any pointy steak knives too?

I can't believe the jury bought that story. Trial by a "Jury of your Peers" is a US invention. An Austrian Criminal case involving offences which are liable for a prison sentence not exceeding 5 years is dealt by the Provincial Court Judge sitting alone.

Pay attention America, your tax dollars paid for supporting Bosnia and along with the Fort Dix terrorists from Kosovo, you are in for a double whammy.
