Algerian security forces foil Belkhadem assassination plot
04/01/2008

Algerian security services have foiled a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Abdelaziz Belkhadem and his family, El Khabar reported on Tuesday (April 1st).

An investigation reportedly found that the assassination order had been passed down through al-Qaeda leaders in Europe and Algeria. Al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb's leader in Algiers, Fatah Bouderbala, was reportedly ordered by the terrorist group's co-ordinators in Europe to kill Belkhadem during his annual holiday in Marsa Ben M'Hidi, Tlemcen wilaya.

Algerian security forces said they intercepted a letter to Bouderbala containing the assassination order. They also reported that they arrested Abderrahmane Telemcani, who had been in charge of delivering the letter. Bouderbala and the alleged courier are both in custody.
