Murder trial resumes in Malatya, Turkey
By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service
TURKEY (ANS) — The trial of five men accused of murdering three Christians in southeast Turkey resumed on Monday, April 14 2008.
Two Turkish Christians from a Muslim-background, Necati Aydin and Ugur Yuksel, and German citizen, Tilman Geske, were tortured to death on 18 April 2007 in the office of a Christian publishing company in the city of Malatya.
Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), says that during the 12-hour hearing on Monday, the lawyers acting for the families of the victims were informed that their request to have the bench of three judges replaced was rejected by a higher court. The lawyers had previously lodged the request declaring that the impartiality and independence of the court was in jeopardy. The court also heard from three of the defendants.
One of the lawyers for the victims families, Tahir Elçi, told Turkish news agency Bianet that although these men had confessed, no one was able to find those who orchestrated the murders. Mr Elçi believes that opportunities for a deeper inquiry have been blocked. This view is shared by other lawyers and the Alliance of Turkish Protestant Churches.
The trial will resume on May 12.
CSWs National Director, Stuart Windsor said: It is concerning that the court is still reluctant to pursue the darker connections behind those standing trial. During the first part of 2008, reports of attacks on church properties and Christian clergymen in Turkey have increased significantly. If the court does not seek to address the larger problem, it will send out a negative and dangerous message to nationalists who have targeted Christians that their actions will go unpunished.
CSW is a human rights organization which specializes in religious freedom, works on behalf of those persecuted for their Christian beliefs and promotes religious liberty for all.

Will Canada's latest human rights triumph convince you to visit there?
Datt wouldn't wash her hands. She just wouldn't -- she said she couldn't. So her employment was terminated. The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal ordered that McDonald's pay her not only $23,000 for "lost income", but an additional $25,000 for her "dignity and self-respect". You see, in B.C. a food preparation worker's self-respect trumps a company's commitment to cleanliness. They violated her "human rights". The $50,000+ penalty -- plus several years of legal fees and medical and rehab experts -- isn't the worst of it. Inventing a "human right" for a worker to go to the bathroom and then to handle meat without washing her hands in between, as an excuse for that $50,000 shakedown isn't the worst of it either.
The worst of it is that the BCHRT has ordered that McDonald's, in paragraph 298 of the decision, to "cease the discriminatory conduct or any similar conduct and refrain from committing the same or similar contravention."
Ummm, don’t eat at McDonald’s in Canada would be my plan.
That sounds like a good plan, until we realize that the legal department of Wendy’s, and Burger King, etc, are taking this ruling into consideration.
Blech.
doubt they really care what Canada does. Yes, they are aware of it, but not mulling it over.
We have Wendy’s and Burger King here too.
Why Izzadeen you bad, bad boy.
And apparently, you weren’t the only one.

I try not to go to Toronto anymore.

MADRID, Spain - Police say an equipment case containing low-level radioactive material that was stolen from a car this week has been found in the doorway of a school in Madrid.
A police spokeswoman says the case was unopened and there were no signs of radioactivity in the area.
She says the case was returned to its owners Thursday.
3 Target stores evacuated after bomb threat
Shoppers at three east metro Target stores never made it to checkout after a bomb threat on Tuesday night.
According to Target officials, stores in Roseville, West St. Paul and St. Paul were evacuated after all three stores received bomb threats.
Target said they contacted law enforcement and out of an "abundance of caution" they evacuated and closed the stores.
I’m sorry fanfan.
Our situation was weird, but not harmful.
Yours was a hard situation.
I’ve been the victim of personal crimes before; and the only bright side is that it helps you formulate a plan as to what to do to prevent that situation (if/when possible) from happening again.
thanks for the ping. All kinds of enemies out there!
Thanks for the Madrid update, Mama Dearest.
