Terri Schiavo's Family Calls for Observance of Terri's Day to Honor Disabled Woman

St. Petersburg, FL (LifeNews.com) -- Terri Schiavo's family and a leading pro-life group are calling on people to honor the disabled woman whose husband took her life in a painful euthanasia death. Together with Priests for Life, the Schindler family has established the observance of “Terri’s Day” each March 31.

That's the day Terri succumbed to a 13-day starvation and dehydration death at the hand of Michael Schiavo, her former husband who won a court order to take her life.

“This third anniversary should be an occasion for all of us to both remember the injustice done to Terri, and reach out to others with prayer and concrete action when they need the kind of help Terri needed," Terri's brother Bobby Schindler told LifeNews.com on Monday.

Suzanne Vitadamo, Terri’s sister, added that Terri's Day is also a way for her family to encourage others to take better care of the elderly and disabled.

“Our family continues to be consoled and uplifted by the many ways in which people honor my sister, learn from her story, and grow in compassion for all the disabled," she said.

During the days leading up to Terri's death, Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life brought comfort and peace to the Schindler family.

Father Pavone was present for the final prayer Terri participated in before her death. He also saw the manipulative ways Michael tried to prevent the Schindler family from caring for her or being present with her during the starvation and dehydration.

“Terri’s death was not the end of her fight," he told LifeNews.com. "It was the beginning of a new chapter in the pro-life movement."

"I call upon all those who were moved by Terri’s death to continue their courageous activism in the cause of life, and never to be silent," he said.

Together, Priests for Life and the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation encourage churches, families, organizations and individuals to observe Terri’s Day with prayers, memorial services, educational activities and community outreach.

It's that Kingsley Guy again. This time he posits that man is so darned smart, who needs God. This Guy is so smart he smirks at the realization that he and his leftist brains are so superior to poor dopes like us. Scientific progress, of course, is as much about correcting mistakes as uncovering truths. Newtonian physics put men on the moon, but Einstein's physics demonstrated its flaws and limitations. When Darwin published his findings in 1859, scientific concepts such as systems theory and feedback loops didn't exist. Today, some bona fide scientists are exploring the idea that consistent patterns influence the evolutionary process.

Scientists need to keep an open mind, for there's no telling what the future will bring in the way of knowledge. As Florida moves into that future, however, its public schools need to deal with real science, and not pseudo-science based on the begats or equally questionable foundations.

Republicans in government should remember Terri Schiavo. They pandered to the religious right by trying to keep her hooked up to a feeding tube, but their actions appalled millions of other Floridians, and they felt the backlash.

The same could hold true for evolution. Legislators may win some votes through an egalitarian approach toward biological science, but they risk alienating plenty of other Floridians who want to live in the 21st century rather than the 17th.

Folks in our area likely best remember him from his campaign in 2004 for the vacant U.S. Senate seat in Illinois. Keyes was recruited as a last-ditch GOP fallguy against Barack Obama, after the primary winner, Jack Ryan, imploded in a divorce/sex scandal, and some other runners-up wanted to dodge the Obama train.

Keyes — as he did in Illinois — has traditionally championed a platform that appears to be more conservative than the GOP electorate in general. But he also has a bit of money and some limited star power. 

The historical highlights of his platform include staunch opposition for gay marriage and homosexuality (which reportedly led to a dust-up with his lesbian daughter Maya), support for a harsh crackdown on Palestinians by Israel, defense of Alabama/Ten Commandments Judge Roy Moore, and advocacy of state intervention in the Terri Schiavo case. His background: a PhD in government from Harvard and almost 20 years as a diplomat mostly under Ronald Reagan.

Keyes for his part has never really given up his quest to influence the national conservative debate. His website proudly bears a quote from Ronald Reagan at a 1988 fundraiser: “I’ve never known a more stout-hearted defender of a strong America than Alan Keyes.”

A pro-life group is tagging Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama for a speech he gave last year at a Planned Parenthood forum. Obama indicated the first action he would take as president would be signing a comprehensive pro-abortion bill that would entrench Roe v. Wade.

This piece by Peggy Noonan really struck me this morning. What are the lessons our children will be learning from this Terri Schiavo travesty?

Terri Schiavo may well die. No good will come of it. Those who are half in love with death will only become more red-fanged and ravenous.

And those who are still learning--our children--oh, what terrible lessons they're learning. What terrible stories are shaping them. They're witnessing the Schiavo drama on television and hearing it on radio. They are seeing a society--their society, their people--on the verge of famously accepting, even embracing, the idea that a damaged life is a throwaway life.

Our children have been reared in the age of abortion, and are coming of age in a time when seemingly respectable people are enthusiastic for euthanasia. It cannot be good for our children, and the world they will make, that they are given this new lesson that human life is not precious, not touched by the divine, not of infinite value.

Once you "know" that--that human life is not so special after all--then everything is possible, and none of it is good. When a society comes to believe that human life is not inherently worth living, it is a slippery slope to the gas chamber. You wind up on a low road that twists past Columbine and leads toward Auschwitz. Today that road runs through Pinellas Park, Fla.

I want Jeb Bush to be the stuff of legend--not president--for saying enough is enough and running into the Bastille to save Terri. Just save her. We will work through the backlash later.

All kidding aside, if a Catholic entrepeneur manufactured small and kid sized Popemobiles (that kids could drive), it could pay for this trip and raise money for needy children. It’s not a religious artifact so I think it would be a great idea. If that’s not a hot idea, whatever but I think it would raise lots of money to use for good.

TALLAHASSEE - A group of Republican senators who helped kill legislation in 2005 to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case may stand with Democrats again this year to oppose a controversial abortion bill.

The Senate is poised to vote on a bill requiring ultrasounds before abortions. Already passed by the House, the bill would require doctors to show the ultrasound results to patients seeking an abortion, unless the patient opted out of the viewing. The bill faces a tougher road in the more politically moderate Senate, where Republicans hold a narrower majority.

For Senate Majority Leader Dan Webster, sponsor of the legislation, the vote could prove to be a flashback.

Three years ago, Webster sponsored legislation to intervene in the case of Schiavo, a vegetative, brain-damaged patient whose husband, Michael, sought to remove her feeding tube over her parents' objections.

A cadre of nine Republicans broke ranks to kill the bill, which would have required that sustenance continue for a patient if there was a dispute among family members over end-of-life issues.

Former Senate President Jim King, R-Jacksonville, was among the Republican dissenters on Schiavo. At the time, he said the issue was "a very personal type of thing. It transcends Republican and Democrat."

Now it appears that abortion ultrasounds may be the same kind of transcendent issue.

King, who opposes Webster's abortion bill, is counting votes from other Republicans to kill it.

"I started out with nine votes," King said Wednesday. "I know I've got more than six, and those six are going to be steadfast."

Webster's seniority, influence and the respect he enjoys make mounting an opposition tougher this year, King said. Webster's retirement from the Senate this year because of term limits has some senators who are personally loyal to Webster thinking of the abortion bill as his "last hurrah."

So far, only one of the Senate's 14 Democrats has said he will vote for Webster's legislation. Sen. Gary Siplin, D-Orlando, voted for it in committee and confirmed Wednesday that he will support it on the Senate floor.

If King has six GOP votes and the Democrats furnish 13, "I'm still one shy" of the 20 needed, he said.

King would not name the six votes he has counted, but noted that not all had voted "no" in the Schiavo case. At least one Republican who dissented in 2005 plans to support this year's bill: JD Alexander of Winter Haven, who is anti-abortion.

Likewise, King can no longer turn to Nancy Argenziano, who voted against the Schiavo bill but left the Senate in 2007 to join the Public Service Commission..............

ALLAHASSEE (FBW) – Sen. Jim King (R-Jacksonville) is attempting to rally fellow moderate Republican senators to kill a bill which would require women seeking abortions to have an ultrasound during the first trimester of pregnancy, the Miami Herald reported today.

Current Florida law already requires ultrasounds during the second and third trimester. Sponsored by Sen. Daniel Webster (R-Winter Garden), SB 2400 includes a provision permitting women to decline to see the ultrasound image.

Webster’s bill has been approved narrowly by two Senate committees and is ready for floor consideration by the entire body. But King, the powerful former president of the Senate and current chairman of the Rules Committee, “has approached moderate Republicans to find out if they’ll join Democrats to vote no,” reported the Herald....

In the infamous satirical essay of that name Swift, the author best known for "Gulliver's Travels", suggested to the Irish public a simple solution to poverty - the culling of babies from poor families, and their subsequent stewing. Not only, he observed, would there be fewer mouths to feed, but the babies would help feed the poor that remained by being converted into a sumptuous and economical stew. A win-win situation. True, the idea of baby stew has always struck Swift's readers as a tad grotesque, and therefore his proposal has never been implemented on a wide scale....
