Penn State Coach Joe Paterno Chooses to Not Greet Bill Clinton

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, a noted Republican, says he thought long and hard before deciding against greeting Bill Clinton when the former president visited campus on behalf of his wife's presidential campaign.

Bill Clinton pitched the Penn State ties of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday during a stop in State College, reminding the mostly youthful audience that her father and brother both played football at Penn State.

In fact, brother Hugh Rodham, a 1972 graduate, was a backup quarterback under Paterno.

Didn’t say he could stop it - he takes a tough stand against it. Granted, some of it may just be PR, but I think there’s a good reason he’s been around as long as he has.

the godfather was able to keep this kind of thing out of the media until recently.

There has been a lot of change in how some of that stuff is viewed over the years though. Even when I was in High School and College (70's) fights were fairly common among young men (even non-athletes), but as long as no one was seriously injured it wasn't considered criminal. In my grandparents day grown men would have fights, but if it was a fight arising from an argument it wasn't considered criminal. Today, if you slam a door and it bounces back hitting someone, you risk being charged with assault! My point on the list you posted of crimes is that in many of the cases that are assault, they simply wouldn't have been considered criminal assaults in the past. They were the kind of fights boys always have gotten into (and always will).

The DUI's and fake ID issues are more related to the changes in the laws. It appears to me that PSU students (athlete or not) aren't really drinking more - it's just been driven off campus (DUI increases when you have to drive to the bar instead of drinking in the dorms), and the enforcement of the drinking age (21) is much tougher than it used to be.

What really has increased alot among PSU football players is downright criminal activity - there's been some breaking and entering not associated with fights, burglary, etc that simply didn't happen 20-30 years ago. I personally think it's the kind of athletes they are recruiting, going to the inner cities to "give those kids a better chance in life", but some of them are simply bringing their way of life with them. Many of those cases result in the kid being kicked off the team and sent home before anyone even knows about it, and you wouldn't have heard about them. Unfortunately, in todays litigious environment, it seems that it's much harder for the coach to just kick players off the team for drinking and fighting, especially if they are players whose parents have money to fight or power with the PSU Administration. Those are the ones who stay on the team till their trial is over...

We are a republic

We don’t have kings

Respect or not —the president is a servant of the people not vice versa

Respect for the office is BS

NO FREE CITIZEN is obligated to meet anybody

"Not getting attention is the worst punishment Clinton could suffer IMHO."

Best response to the great narcissist.

Well Joe Paterno is certainly no Bruce Pearl! (Tenn. men's basketball)

It certainly is refreshing to see someone that young people can pattern their lives after. Go Joe!

Clinton is an embarrassment and should be shunned by decent people. Not getting attention is the worst punishment Clinton could suffer IMHO.

Clinton came to my area of PA last week, and thousands turned out to see him. Go figure...

450lb fat, bloated lump of lard, “Huge Rotten” was a back-up, back-stop for the baseball team. There; fixed that.

Not the football team?

If we all turned our backs on the grifters, we could make a large statement.

(I do have to admit that I’d love to be able to “pass gas” in his absolute direction!!!)

He dishonored the Office of the President and deserves no respect from anyone.

Excuse me, but was he even asked to greet him? Despite that coaches think it’s all about them, he isn’t the president of the university nor was he one of the one’s who sent Clinton the invitation.

Possibly an invitation went out to prominent members of the faculty and staff to meet clinton...

“Oh, I’m so excited about this opportunity . . . . BARRRRRF.” All over his shoes, and with any luck, his pants.

Would the SS arrest you over that? I mean, you couldn’t help it. It just happened.

I would have loved to have seen Woody deck Clinton, like he did that Clemson player.

If I spit on hin, I would be arrested.
I probably would get arrested for defacing his/her grave.
If you barfed on him, you could claim nervous stomach.
I will need to reconsider my plans.
LOL
