MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A man nearly crushed inside a garbage truck told police he can't recall how he ended up inside a trash bin - and then the truck - after a night of drinking with friends.
William M. Bowen, 27, awoke about 6:30 a.m. Thursday to find that he was inside a commercial trash-collection truck filled with waste.
A Rumpke garbage truck driver had emptied a bin behind the Muncie Eye Center into his truck and was about to activate its trash compressor when he heard someone screaming.
"He looked up and this gentleman was standing out the top of our truck," said Larry Green, market safety supervisor for Rumpke.
Green said the only thing Bowen said to the driver who found him was that he was cold.
"This gentleman was extremely intoxicated," he said.
Bowen told police the last thing he remembers before waking up in the truck was drinking with buddies about 3 a.m. Thursday at a Muncie bar.
Bowen, who wouldn't tell police who his drinking pals were, was treated and released with minor injuries from Ball Memorial Hospital.
Green said Bowen was lucky that wasn't seriously injured or killed in the trash compressor.
"I'm just glad it turned out the way it did," Green said. "We didn't have a body that was dead. We had a body that was talking."
There was no telephone listing for Bowen in the Muncie area.
he would have been a unanimous choice
This almost happened where I work. We had a man that liked to dig in the trash. He was a little unbalanced in the head. Anyway, one day I was cleaning out my office and carried an armload of trash to the dumpster. I tossed it in and pushed the button to start the compactor. I saw some trash inside the dumpster move and hit the emergency stop just as this nutcase crawled out from under trash in the rear of the dumpster. He spent half the day in the office getting butt chewed and was eventually fired. He wasn’t drunk; just stupid.
Lol!
"who called me a garbage truck ?"
As I was reading your story I thought it was just a guy who hung out around your office dumpsters picking through them...not another employee!
Well duh!
There is good story here....spill it.
When he was hired he was fine. He had a terrible auto accident and was slightly brain damaged from it. The company found menial jobs for him to do and he did OK for several years, but as he got older he got worse. I don’t know for sure but I don’t think they actually “fired” him. That is what they called it but I think they helped him get some kind of disability for mental disabilities. The rumor was that they did.
He was sort of pitiful. He scrounged in all the trash cans and saved everything. He saved used tape, pieces of string, paper clips, even splinters of wood from pallets. He checked all the vending machines in the cafeteria to see if anybody left their change and felt around under the cushions in the lounge. He was well paid and there was no reason other than mental problems that would cause this kind of behavior. He worked on the manufacturing floor and he was never on his actual job. He was always prowling in trash.
He eventually got so bad that he was a liability to keep around the workplace. I’m sure they took care of him though. They have done it for other people.
This photo has to be photoshopped. If not, someone (a brave person preferably) should tell this woman that her stomach is hanging down below her dress. Like myself, she needs a diet and also, lacking that, certainly a much longer dress.
There’s a famous scene in a movie where Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw escape the cops via a dump truck and get thrown out with the trash out on Staten Island. Wish I could remember the name...
With pals like that who needs enemies?
Or some else I know who woke up in a RR boxcar many miles from home.
Those Star Wars reenactments can get dangerous, especially if R2D2 has gone home early...
The Getaway?
That’s a very good employer.
Not exactly correct. He does remember how he got there - "a night of drinking with friends". It's just those pesky "little details" of the night that he can't recall.
;-)
Bingo, thank you.
