What Are You Reading Now? - My Quarterly Inquiry
3/28/08

Posted on 03/28/2008 6:52:40 AM PDT by MplsSteve

OK everyone, it's time for my quarterly "What Are You Reading Now" post.

I like to get a feel for what Freepers are reading these days. It can be anything...a best seller, a literary classic, a trashy pulp novel, a scientific journal, etc.

Do not demean this thread with posts like "I'm reading this Thread right now". It became un-funny a long time ago.

I'll start. I've just started "One Square Mile Of Hell: The Battle For Tarawa" by John Wukovitz.

Rather than a minute by minute account of the battle, it takes a more personalized view of the battle by interviewing a few combatants and the families of those who died in the battle. I wasn't sure I'd like this format at first - but am really starting to get into this book.

Well...what are YOU reading right now?

Just finishing re-reading Catcher in the Rye.

You know what? It is, without question, the most annoying piece of work I have ever read. I believe serial killers always have copies because it is reading this crap that drives them to kill.

WE THE LIVING: one of my all-time favorite books! Seeing the title here makes me want to read it again.

I can hardly stand to read Grisham any more. I started reading Turrow and they made Grishams books read and feel like middle school creative writing assignments.

Interestingly enough, I was looking at a biography of Ayn Rand this morning (after posting to this thread) and I saw a list of people who have been influenced by her and her writings. The author of the other book (and series) I just finished, Terry Goodkind, was listed among those. After reading his Sword of Truth series, and now getting a taste of Atlas Shrugged, I can certainly see the influence.

I have read the first three and really enjoyed them.

I did not know the others were out until I read this thread. I have a trip to the store planned to pick them up.

Me too, my ex hubby (a bit of a psycho, himself) was so hot on it that I was convinced that it would be the greatest piece of literary genius ever published. When I read it I was more than disappointed, it was the first time that I started worrying about my husband. I just didn't get it.

I found "Le Ton Beau De Marot: In Praise of the Music of Language" by Hofstadter a bit more enjoyable than GEB. If only because the former concentrated on language and the art of its translation while the latter on pretty much everything. On the whole a tighter, more organized presentation.

So if GEB loses your interest try this other one.
