What Are You Reading Now? - My Quarterly Inquiry
3/28/08

Posted on 03/28/2008 6:52:40 AM PDT by MplsSteve

OK everyone, it's time for my quarterly "What Are You Reading Now" post.

I like to get a feel for what Freepers are reading these days. It can be anything...a best seller, a literary classic, a trashy pulp novel, a scientific journal, etc.

Do not demean this thread with posts like "I'm reading this Thread right now". It became un-funny a long time ago.

I'll start. I've just started "One Square Mile Of Hell: The Battle For Tarawa" by John Wukovitz.

Rather than a minute by minute account of the battle, it takes a more personalized view of the battle by interviewing a few combatants and the families of those who died in the battle. I wasn't sure I'd like this format at first - but am really starting to get into this book.

Well...what are YOU reading right now?

While recuperating from my recent heart attack, I have decided to reread the collected works of Rudyard Kipling, starting with the poetry. Makes for a nice respite from the blood pressure elevating fare on FR.

Just finished Return to Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani. Loved it! Still trying to finish Queen of Scots by John Guy. Great bio of Mary Queen of Scots, but long.

I used to read political and spiritual books all the time, but lately I have lost interest in them. I get so much of this from the Web and magaiznes I subscribe to. But you can't find good works of biography or fiction on the Web or in a magazine.

Blacklisted By History is next on my list.

I’ve read a few pages here and there and it looks good.

I’m reading “The Kent Chronicles”, a bicentennial series about the birth of America from 18th century England to modern times. It was written in 1976 by John Jakes (a little liberal for me, but he’s a good writer). I read it when it first came out and am enjoying it again all these years later. Just finished The Reagan Diaries - good read.

Barmes & Noble had “Liberal Fascism” out front with the best sellers.

My local Border’s does not. They have it buried in back with the “Political” books.

I always walk to the back and get a few copies of it and place it in front of the Hussein Obambi O’Baloney books or Al Franken books.

I ask them why its not out front with the other best sellers and never get an answer.

Borders is on the verge of bankruptcy anyway. They’re trying to get bought out by somebody to save themselves. I wonder why.

Have you read all the George books? The ones you cited were her last two. I think she has a new one coming out this year. She is one of my favorite authors.

I’ve been mostly reading my own draft for my book. It has been a rather busy time lately with little time for reading.

I currently have three books checked out of the library.

The first is last year's Biography of Charles M. Schulz, which is sooooo dreary and depressing that I'm giving up on it. It's not how I wish to remember him

Next is "2001: A Space Oddysey". I read 3001 a few years ago, but none of the others. Clarke's death had me request it.

The third one is rather obscure: "Fantasia Mathematica", which I saw in a bibliography of Clarke's. It piqued my interest.

I also just updated this link:
