Three cheers for Representative Michele Bachman, who this past week introduced the Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act (H.R. 5616), which would repeal the mandated phase-out of the incandescent light bulb.
Last December, Congress passed, and the President signed, an abomination of an energy bill, that, among other things, bans the incandescent light bulb because it is too energy inefficient.
But some consumers, like me, prefer incandescent light bulbs because they make our pasty white skin look tan at bars and restaurants. Other consumers dont want to have to go through the hassle of cleaning up broken energy efficient light bulbs, which contain mercury, and are therefore difficult to dispose (the EPA has published a 7 page instruction manual on cleaning up a broken CFL).
Whatever the reason, lets applaud Rep. Bachman for her efforts on behalf of consumer choice.
I do!
The “green” bulb hurts my eyes.
I prefer the old fashioned light bulb for my eyes.
Ominous, indeed.
NFP
The bill was stupid....and besides LED is the best nextgen lighting technology. CF is already old.
Congress critter ping!

Does this mean I am going to have to replace my gaslights?
Dunno about you, but I plan on making a good-sized hoard of incandescent bulbs right before this goes into effect. Fluorescents have always given me serious headaches from prolonged exposure - it’s one of the reasons I work from a home office, corporate offices with those lights are debilitating.
Was she a Damolrat?
This lady needs our support! When the new kind of bulb breaks,it takes a major clean-up (including cutting out the area of carpet upon which the broken bulb falls). The idea of forcing consumers to subject themselves to this hassle is completely unacceptable. Representative Bachmann should be inundated with meassages of support.

I like my CFLs... but thoroughly agree!
While she is in the mood, why doesn't she introduce a bill that once again allows a mere American civilian to buy a 4 gallon per flush toilet?
No. 1: The fed gov't has no right to mandate what we choose to use in our homes.
No 2: it's just another boondoggle to force every household in America to buy a certain product - with stocks already bought in at the bottom level by the 'mandators' - you can bet your bippy.
No 3: Another BIG LIE - more energy efficient?
I wouldn't think so. Not after you add in the cost of disposal. These little toxic bombs are mandated to be taken to a toxic waster center - for which you will need to pay a drop off fee - and then, any estimates on how much energy it will take for the disposal process. and BTW, just what IS this process? Where does the end product end up? How many additional toxic waste dumps will be necessary?
Plus, it's a good bet that the majority of these bombs will be thrown in the regular trash, where they will go to every land fill in the nation, turning them all into mercury laden toxic dumps - for future super fund cleanups?
How energy efficient it that?
Here are the official guidelines in my state for "What if I break ..." (and this has been toned down, believe it or not.)

We aren't the only country that has passed the 'out by 2012 law - we need to jump on this before all the manufacturers stop producing our good old, friendly light, safe bulbs. The rhetoric that goes with forcing these eye-unfriendly, toxic bulbs on us is akin to the forked, twisted tongue rationales of an Obama
In the meantime, I'm stocking up on what may become contraband bulbs - also, you need to be sure you have enough old lamps because they also plan to make lamps that will use only the lower watt bulbs.
Thanks for the info!
I’m in Maine, too. I’m stocking up on the “old” light bulbs and I plan to have enough to last until the day I assume room temperature and finally leave this crazy-ass planet.
And if we don't get this defeated, I'll be the little ole granny with shades drawn, reading-knitting-painting, under my illegal lights.
And if there's a knock on the door - oh, they don't knock anymore, do they, the just bust the door down in the middle of the night - well, I've got my trusty little equalizer.
Whatever - I WILL NOT 'obey.'
My noncompliance will not be about the light bulbs - but the creeping, unconstitutional mandates.
Ominous hell.
I have to flush twice because of federal regulations that limit the amount of water that my toilet can contain.
Do you think George Washington and the rest of the patriots that fought for our Freedom would have done so if they knew the size of a crap-disposer would become a FEDERAL LAW?
