WASHINGTON, March 12, 2008 The top U.S. general in the Pacific told Congress yesterday that hes working to strengthen the U.S.-Sino relationship, but he emphasized the need to keep a close eye on China as it strives to expand its influence in the region.Keating described what he thinks, but isnt sure, was a tongue-in-cheek comment a senior Chinese officer made during the admirals first visit there as PACOM commander. With a straight face, Chinese officer said, As we develop our aircraft carriers, -- a remark Keating said he found interesting in itself -- why dont we reach an agreement, you and I?
Then came the Chinese proposal: You take Hawaii east. Well take Hawaii west. Well share information, and well save you all the trouble of deploying your naval forces west of Hawaii.
Keating called the statement telling. Even if in jest, it indicates some consideration of the strategic vision that the Peoples Liberation Army, navy and air force might have, he said. While not necessarily hegemonic, they clearly want to expand their areas of influence.
Umm thats no going to happen.Ever.
Aren’t Guam, the rest of the Mariannas, Wake, and Midway all west of Hawaii? What should we do with them? Give them to the Chinese to be used as military bases?
When he said, "Hawaii East" he wasn't referring to "East Hawaii" but to everything in the Pacific east of Hawaii, declaring that everything west of Hawaii was to be patrolled and controlled by China.
I think the Japanese might have something to say about that.
Time for japan to be allowed aircraft carriers and full rearmament. China wants to pearl harbor us and have pacific hegemony.
China needs to be very careful messing with Japan. They only need a reason to rearm and our military complex will be more than happy to help them do it.
I think Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett might have something to say about this too.
