Contraband candy has led to big trouble for an eighth-grade honors student.
Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.
The New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a district-wide school wellness policy, said school spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo.
Shelli Sheridan, Michael's mother, said he is a top student with no previous disciplinary problems.
"It's too much. It's too unfair," she said. "He's never even had a detention."
Michael's suspension has been reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president.
He said he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice that the student selling the Skittles on Feb. 26 was being secretive.

Smuggling contraband Skittles? How fiendish!!!!!!!!/heavy sarcasm
Well, obviously this sort of thing is MUCH more important than teaching the 3 R’s! /sarc
Give me a break. Hope this kid’s family fights this nanny state business!! The punishment was way too drastic for the ‘crime’, for Pete’s sake.
OTOH, they want girls to have access to birth control without their parents knowledge and consent.
Now buying a bag of Skittles is a CRIME?
If the other child doesn't want to give it to him or trade something, why not let him BUY it from the kid?
I don’t see where it is a crime?
Help me!
Please tell me this is a parody.
For that kind of punishment the kid should have brought in some pot, my lord. If candy and fast food was banned at my school there would have been riots.
He should have limited his purchases to school-approved items.
You know, like condoms.

“I dont see where it is a crime?
Help me!”
Because they say so.
When American women have hyphenated last names, you can usually expect the wacky ideas and attitudes to manifest themselves shortly.
Controlling students’ education isn’t enough for this school district/principal, apparently...they MUST control the child’s diet since you know, the parents’ aren’t smart enough to do so! Puleeze.
Slow down, cowboy, not ALL women with hyphenated names have wacky ideas like this! (From someone with a hyphenated last name. :-)
I just thank God this kid wasn’t dealing with illegal peanut butter products—isn’t that a death penalty offence at schools nowadays?!?
“Please tell me this is a parody.”
I wish I could. Like Metmom said on another thread, you can’t make up stuff like this.
Unfortunately Its not. Its liberal nanny-statism and do-gooderism run amok.
Here, give this principal a piece of your mind: (203)946-8828
When Skittles are outlawed only outlaws will have Skittles.
Isn’t that the truth.
NAZIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This could actually affect the student’s chance of being accepted by a competitive college. I’d say it’s definitely time to sue the school. And, of course, enroll the boy in a private school.
Makes me glad my three boys are now grown men but I fear for what my two little grand-daughters will have to face. This is just plain nonsense!
