I watched that show last night “Earth, Population Zero” and heard that outrageous quote that 19 pounds of CO2 are released for every gallon of gas burned. This is up from seventeen pounds in the movie, “Who Killed The Electric Car”. I need someone to explain to me so that I can understand, How do you burn EIGHT pounds of fuel, releasing all that heat energy, and end up with NINETEEN pounds of CO2?

Gasoline is approximately C8H18 or octane with a molecular weight of 114. The 8 carbon atoms combine to form 8 CO2 molecules Molecular weigh 44 * 8 = 352.

Therefore the CO2 formed is 3 times the weight of the gasoline.

That one might be right up cogitator's alley.
