A longtime Republican district fell to the Democrats Saturday when a wealthy businessman and scientist snatched former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's congressional seat in a closely watched special election. Democrat Bill Foster won 52 percent of the vote compared to 48 percent for Republican Jim Oberweis. With 565 of 568 precincts reporting, Foster had 51,140 votes to Oberweis' 46,270.

“Big deal... Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Corrupt, inept, and will spend like a drunken sailor.”
He’s right, you know.
It will be awful indeed unless we get our act together FAST.
Who is John Galt?
Democrats ATTACKED OBERWEIS ON IMMIGRATION...
“”There are very big policy differences [between us],” Foster said. It is about “whether you favor a continuation of George Bush’s policies or whether you think things should change.”
The 14th District stretches from western DuPage County to nearly the Mississippi River.
Bush received 55 percent of the vote in 2004 and Hastert received 60 percent in 2006. Despite that leaning, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has sent a mail piece to voters attacking Oberweis on immigration.”
I WONDER WHAT THEY SAID.
Did they mention how Obama is for amnesty and Oberweis is not? Nope.

Falsely accused him of hiring illegals.
Where are you planning on emigrating to? Most other countries are even more socialistic than America.
Well, this just goes to show you that when the American People have the choice between a Democrat and a Democrat, they’ll vote for a Democrat every time.
Goldwater as a foundation after losing?
How much did he win by in 1964? Anyone?
How long do you want the Republicans to be in the wilderness while obama and crew permanently changes this nation into an obama-nation?
“Im starting to wonder if folks who consider themselves true conservatives understand what Reagan was about. Reagan was a major supporters of global trading.”
Of course he was. To be for global trading is to for freedom, prosperity and a strong America. Its Reagan who with Brian Mulroney got the ball rolling on the now-maligned NAFTA.
Yet Reagan is idolized, while those who espouse similar policies are trashed as unfit to shine Reagan’s shoes.
Good God.
Isn’t it clear that neither Party has respect? People know what they have isn’t working, so they try anything else. If it had been a Democrat incumbent he would have been tossed out as well.
“The problem is that I’m out of candidates.”
NO YOU ARE NOT!
Support Cornyn, and help get him re-elected.
If we can lose a 20-year GOP seat like that, then *any* seat is vulnerable this year. Help your Congressional candidates. Help your statehouse candidates!
There is a lot more than a president at stake in 2008!
Yes, folks ... time to stare into the abyss of losing and decide if you care about saving America from the Demoncrat cr*pper in 2009. Not just Iraq, but taxes, marriage, life/abortion, and our country itself (demography redefined via amnesty) is on the line.
There is one economic cure:
MAKE THE TAX CUTS PERMANENT - NOW!!!
The GOP needs to lay it on the line.
You are right. Conservatives are just along for the ride, and it will be an expensive ride.
Nonsense.
Master, the smart horse learn before the whipping, the dumb horse only learns after.
Instead of talking riddles, lay out what we do now to regain a conservative Republican majority before November.
Defeatist rhetoric is pointless now, what is needed is winning agenda and strategy. What is it?
Why run a loser again?
I would support a conservative party, if I was convinced it was truly conservative.
Obama-loving media will cover all sins.
Even if we are in a depression for 4 years, it will be blamed on Bush.
Kind of like how FDR kept America in depression for 8 years with his crappy New Deal failures, but Hoover got all the blame for FDR’s bad economic policies.
"I stated many moons ago on this board that GWB has almost effectively destroyed the GOP as a sharp, functioning party and I took a lot of heat for it. I almost started a daily prayer thread for myself. But I reiterate my position."
Spendin' George and his "Compassionate Conservative" brand of socialism has destroyed the Republican party for at least the next decade. Maybe longer depending on how long it takes the country to dig out of the coming recession his fiscal policies have helped bring.
The best thing for conservatives to do is distance themselves from him and his. If we're lucky, sooner or later people will forget how we got here. In the mean time, maybe we can turn the rest of the party around or see the start of another that isn't Democrat-Lite...
