Schwarzenegger denounces 'outrageous' homeschooling ruling
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/7/2008 | Jill Tucker and Bob Egelko

(03-07) 13:37 PST SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger promised today to ensure that parents have the right to homeschool their children, after a state appeals court ruling severely restricted the practice in California.

"Every California child deserves a quality education and parents should have the right to decide what's best for their children," the governor said in a statement. "Parents should not be penalized for acting in the best interests of their children's education. This outrageous ruling must be overturned by the courts and if the courts don't protect parents' rights then, as elected officials, we will."

An estimated 166,000 children are homeschooled across the state.

The ruling by the Second District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles said all children ages 6 to 18 must attend public or private school full-time until graduation from high school or be tutored at home by a credentialed teacher.

The Southern California case stemmed from a child welfare dispute involving the children of Phillip and Mary Long of Lynwood (Los Angeles County). The couple's eight children have been home-schooled by Mary Long, who holds no teaching credential. The children were also enrolled in a private school through an independent study program, which included quarterly home visits. Although the case did not involve the question of the children's truancy, the court decision broadly addressed the legality of homeschooling in California while specifically ruling that the Long family's situation violated state law.

I personally hold 2 B.S. degrees. One in Computer software design and one in Electrical Engineering. I also hold a masters in Technology management. Do you know that I couldn’t get a job in the State on NJ as a teacher without obtaining another 4 year degree in education? And then I would have to jump through all kinds of hoops for both the state and the NEA so that I could teach in this godforsaken cesspit of a state. I also did a number of years in the USN and hold a Masters Training Certification, if you know what that is you know what a pain in the rear end it is to get and maintain. I am more qualified to teach hard sciences to any elementary, Jr High, High school or community college than most of the dead weight in the system. Get credentials my hairy behind.

The public school teachers can come to me for their credentials. I require that they be able to read with excellent comprehension, write legibly and logically, have a true and patriotic view of American history, be able to intelligently analyze and solve math problems, have no pederast or pedophile tendencies, and vow to never push their personal political agenda on the classroom.

Then maybe I’ll let them teach my kids. Until I am satisfied that they meet my standards, I’ll teach my own without apology.

That's kind of amusing considering the legislature is now moving to teach communism in California schools.

It sickens me.

Unfortunately, Ahnold has turned into the RINO that too many others here warned he was. I, for one, should have listened.

These days, he seems to be on both sides of every issue. It’s a typical RINO tactic.

What do the public school teachers know?

How to put a rubber on a cucumber.

How Marx and Castro are the saviors of the universe.

That God is dead.

The gender is relative.

That the U.S. is evil.

That the Democrats are the best party.

That unions are for the little guy.

That supply side economics is a myth.

That racism is the American way of life.

That homosexuality is healthy and normal.

That children have sexual lives.

I could go on and on. God help us from these “teachers” who “know” so much.

Yesterday's article said 220,000.

You’re right, parents are stupid!! How arrogant of them to even think they know anything. When more than half of your classes are on classroom management and teaching methods, Don’t you even stop to think about the way education is going?? Think outside the box your in, my friend.

Economics is an elective?? or even offered? The Declaration of Independence is not memorized?? I could go on and on, but let this suffice; You’ve successfully taken the work out of school and replaced it with entertainment, leading to the current demise of the greatest nation on earth.

Will somebody please reassure me that Gov. Schwarzenegger is not basing his reaction to this issue on the same bogus information concerning this issue that I was basing my rants on in previous related threads?

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. If you want on/off this list, please freepmail me. The main Homeschool Ping List by DaveLoneRanger handles the homeschool-specific articles. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list.

Update.

We homeschooled our 3 children. We beat the schools CAT Scores.
Our oldest score was 82% when we had her go to College.
Near one of us had a college degree or took classes to teach.
If you help your children do their homework you ARE teaching them.

Where have you been?

This thread is about Arnold’s response, not the initial ruling.

Wow, the court made a ruling that was so outrageous in its unConstitutional, left-wing activism, even Schwarzenegger denounced it.

He’s not as “liberal” as people think.

Well, some people label you a liberal if you stray on even one issue. Arnold is a social liberal, but a fiscal conservative. But he has been disappointing.
