High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week. Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.
"As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday.
Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances.
"The Bible says people see sounds, and that is a clasic phenomenon," he said citing the example of religious ceremonies in the Amazon in which drugs are used that induce people to "see music."
He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon forest in 1991. "I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious connotations," Shanon said.
He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were comparable to those produced by concoctions based on bark of the acacia tree, that is frequently mentioned in the Bible.

The author is projecting. Yeah, and he gets paid to do it. Whatever happened to "a mind is a terrible thing to waste"? I know that was for the poor disadvantaged Black, er I mean, African American youth, but it still applies. Wonder what his course study was to get his degree....

Ah, loved ‘the story’ ... one wonders what the dr. johnson’s of the Christian world are thinking! Seems they’re not ‘in’ the Christian world, first of all.

No, the old buggerer Mohammed was a perfectly sober calculator, who knew exactly what kind of evil tale he was spinning.

My wife had a prof in college that said that the Apostles were a bunch of stoners too. He said that Jesus was just the result of dabbling with magic mushrooms.
He stopped dead in his tracks when my wife asked him to identify exactly what types of mushrooms grow in a desert climate.

It alsom makes the ancient Israelites out to be a bunch of dumb jerks who couldnt tell when a guy is high or not.
Ya think the Mormons were a bunch of dumb jerks for following Joseph Smith who was visited by the angel Moroni and subsequently following Brigham Young across the country enduring extreme hardships

If Moses was under the “effects of narcotics” I would have to doubt he did much mountain climbing. One of the effects of narcotics is drowsiness. Besides, narcotics are more like heroin, opium and that sort of thing.
Moses would more likely have been using pschodelics, like mushrooms or mandrake.
IMHO though, Moses saw exactly what he said he did, heard exactly who he said he heard.

Leviticus 10:8) And the LORD spoke to Aaron, saying, 9.)Do not drink wine nor strong drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest you die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:
10) And that you may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;
