The U.S. military are investigating a shocking video of a smiling Marine throwing a puppy off the top of a steep hillside in Iraq into a gully below.
The video gained widespread attention and condemnation after appearing on the web site YouTube, where it has been viewed over 8,000 times.
The footage shows two Marines, in combat gear and smiling, as one holds a white-and-black puppy by the scruff of its neck.

The small dog seems to be about eight weeks old and is motionless as it is held.
"Cute little puppy, huh?" says one Marine as he smiles broadly.
"Oh so cute, so cute, little puppy," says another in a child-like voice.
The Marine holding the puppy then turns and hurls the animal overhand into a desert-like gully below.
The puppy can be heard yelping in terror until it thuds to the ground at the bottom of the gully.
"That's mean," one Marine says after, in a sickening understatement.
"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," a spokesperson revealed.
Marine spokesman Major Chris Perrine believed the culprit is based in Hawaii.
"We do not tolerate this type of behaviour and will take appropriate action," he said.
The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment of about 1,000 Hawaii Marines recently replaced a sister unit in Iraq, the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment.
Marine Corps Base Hawaii said the vast majority of Marines "conduct their duties in an honourable manner that brings great credit upon the Marine Corps and the United States."
"There have been numerous stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq or helping to arrange life-saving medical care for Iraqi children," said Major Chris Perrine.
"Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave."
SOLDIERS PROVIDE AID TO IRAQI ORPHANAGE
KIRKUK Soldiers with 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, visited a Kirkuk orphanage, Feb. 3. The Soldiers passed out food, supplies and toys, hoping to brighten the childrens faces and provide them with some things that they often go without, said Capt. Greg Hotaling, Company D commander.
In addition to donating food and supplies, the Multi-National Division North Soldiers made plans to help the orphanage build an indoor recreation room, where the boys have somewhere to play during bad weather, Hotaling said.
The Soldiers plan to visit the orphanage regularly during the duration of their deployment.
Its just an amazing feeling to know that we are putting smiles on the faces of these children, and we will continue to work with them until we leave, said Cincinnati, Ohio, native, Sgt. 1st Class Steven Bailey. The boys are real smart, too. I was teaching them English and they were teaching me Arabic.
His HUGE EGO is what keeps him running.
I get his e-mails and laugh. He keeps telling the “Rangers” that they can still win!
Honestly, you have to be on drugs to buy into that.
“Even if it’s a toy, you think it’s cruel? You can’t be cruel to a toy anymore than you can be cruel to a brick.
You can make a dumb inappropriate joke with a toy, but you can’t be cruel to it.”
To go to that much trouble and use a “stuffed” animals in that video - still means to me that the person is sadistic. It’s the symbolism. Hurling a dog off a cliff isn’t funny. It’s how it unfolded - ah the cute puppy and then hurling it - not funny.
Hey, if you think sadism has it’s place in humor - by all means laugh at it - celebrate it. Just don’t ask us to join in. What a person finds amusing in humor also gives you insight into their soul ....
Evidently you have also.
I didn't enjoy it. Did you?
Do you know how calves and lambs are treated when they are prepared for slaughter? Think about it.
I turned away from the dark side and embraced my humanity, and I decided not to continue eating animals and subjecting them, even by proxy, to fear, suffering, pain, and death.
Perhaps if you turned away from the dark side and embraced your humanity, you would cease to devour the flesh of helpless animals and cease to enjoy subjecting them to fear, pain, and death.
Of course, you can do whatever you want. If you enjoy subjecting animals to pain, torture, and death, if you enjoy catching them and witnessing their suffering, you will do that. Obviously, it's your decision to make.
Obviously not a pet owner.
Dogs are as much part of the family as the wife and kids are.
Besides, as a famous American writer once posited: “The more people I meet, the more I like my dog.”
What are you talking about?????
I just lambasted a poster here for not respecting the life of another animal.
The cruelty is NOT to a toy or a brick. If this is a toy, the cruelty is to the Marine Corp and people that are subjected to the falsehood!
It has been more or less confirmed that the guy is a Marine. His name is known and he’s now bearing the brunt of an internet-generated shitstorm.
However, I think the dog was either fake or already dead. The noises are highly suspect. Not only the yelping, but the thud you hear when the dog lands. There is no way in hell a consumer-grade camera would pick up the sound of a dog that size landing at the bottom of a cliff 20 yards away.
You sir, are a coldhearted and hateful creature.
And I appreciate and thank the military for what they do.
But this type of behavior is totally unacceptable.
As is your justification of it and your even more putrid comments defending your justification.
Hey, if you think my labeling twisted jokes using a toy "dumb and inappropriate" means I celebrate them and find them funny, I pity your reading comprehension ability.
It's cruel when I laugh at your inability to grasp the basics of the English language, but I do it anyway.
I don’t think being a dog-lover is required in order to be outraged by this video, nor does it matter whether it can be proven whether the dog is already dead or not. This is beyond disturbing, and this young man needs psychiatric help immediately. He should be identified, and removed from the military. What kind of individual would be entertained from filming this kind of “prank”, real or not?
This does NOT depict the humanity and courage and character of our military troops.
Number 1, we don’t know yet who ‘they’ are.
second, at the very least the military deserves to be treated innocent until proved guilty. The fact that there is some ‘video’ on the Internet showing a bad act does not change my stance until something is proven in a courtroom.
If they did do it then, it was bad. However, it is not the end of the world. The mere fact that you are joining the MSM propaganda machine initially without waiting for a decision by the military is troubling to me.
My apologies. I think I may have clicked on your post by accident.
You can’t be cruel to a toy anymore than you can be cruel to a brick.
The cruelty is NOT to a toy or a brick. If this is a toy, the cruelty is to the Marine Corp and people that are subjected to the falsehood!
I don’t blame the entire “Marine Corp” for the sadistic humor of two men if this is real.
I also see NO HUMOR in using a life like stuffed animal being used to demonstrate cruelty as a “funny joke”.
I also don’t see this as “America’s Shame”. It’s the SHAME of the two involved. I see no humor in sadism or boradbrushing an entire group.
Progressive Truth.
Think “Pravda”
I thank God that in the Military we have Dogs who serve and protect us.
The human thing to feel like we owe Dogs something in return for what they do for us.
The Religious thing is to look at all the various tasks that the Dog does and all that it has done to serve and protect mankind and realize that there may be no better proof of God than the Dog.
Of course if some so called Christian thinks the Heathens of Korea is right then what can I say.
I personally believe we will be judged in part by God on how we treat his Dogs.
yes we do. The guy’s name is now known if you read some of the links posted in this thread.
The USMC is investigating now.
I hope these two swing from a yardarm....yeah, I know, they don’t do that any more.
Pity.
