Man Butchers 15-Month-Old Nephew in Jeddah Supermarket Samir Al-Saadi, Arab News

JEDDAH, 3 March 2008 — Early morning shoppers at a supermarket in Jeddah were left reeling yesterday, with some falling unconscious, after a well-built Syrian man clinched a knife and decapitated his 15-month-old nephew in front of his mother in the store’s fruit and vegetable section.

In a brutal murder that has shocked the city, the 25-year-old man beheaded the boy, who was out shopping with his mother — in full glare of shoppers and staff at Al-Marhaba supermarket on Sari Street around 9.30 a.m. The man, who is the boy’s maternal uncle, apparently killed the boy following a dispute with his sister and brother-in-law.

Eyewitnesses said that the man picked up a knife from inside the store and severed the boy’s head. The mother and a shopper standing close by fainted, while several other stood in shock and disbelief over what had happened.

A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Arab News, “The murderer was in a dispute with the boy’s mother and her husband. He chopped off the boy’s head in front of the mother to get back at her.” He added that the mother has been left traumatized and is in hospital. The boy’s father was at work at the time of the incident.

Following the murder, police sealed off the supermarket while forensic experts gathered evidence. Ambulances were also called to the scene. The supermarket reopened for business at around 1.15 p.m. “It happened so quickly. Before people could intervene, the man had cut more than half way through the child’s neck,” said Abu Muhammad, a grandfather in his mid-60s.

A Saudi till attendant at a nearby cafe said, “One of my colleagues went to see what was going on and returned shivering. He saw the kid’s body and so we gave him the day off. He was in a bad state.”

An eyewitness, who lives in the neighborhood, said that the victim’s family lived close by and frequented the supermarket. “I’ve seen the murderer carrying the same child and playing with him on a number of occasions,” he added.

“No one could bear the gruesome sight of the boy’s decapitated body lying on the floor,” said Muneer, a Turkish car mechanic, who works at a garage close by. “How could someone do such a thing? I just can’t understand it... I still can’t believe it,” he said, shaking his head.

When the store reopened, employees were still in a state of shock. A guard, standing at the entrance, stood frozen and oblivious to the rush of shoppers. Pain and anguish were writ large on his face.

My husband just told me of an article he read on msn about Walmart in Michigan catering big time to the Arab population. Arab employees that speak Arabic and bringing in food items from the middle east. Then they discovered that the store had too much pork products and pulled back on stocking so much pork products. For the first time in my life I understand the right to bear arms! Because our country has lost it’s moral soul and the enemy is in the country and have told us they are going to kill us.Consolation-the homosexuals had better be on guard, their time is short.

> I don’t want to sound cold...but this happens all the time here in the US...what’s the difference between cutting the head or throwing a kid off a bridge...or shooting him in the head...My point is the righteous indignation is a bit over the top. Americans do it too.

Yes, but...

Don't react only to the last two points. The first two are the ones that matter to this discussion.

that are not only tolerated by the government and people, but are actively considered the foundation of the society.

From this article, it didn't sound like the people were anything but mortified by it. I take a little comfort in that...at least.

How about these family values?

I am not sure if the killer was Muslim.

I get so confused with these family dispute killings. Will this be an actual murder or brushed off as an “honor killing?” Either way, will the man even be punished? So sad.

Yes, but... while the local people might be shocked and mortified by the slaughter of a baby, why are they completely understanding and supportive of the scores of premeditated murders of teenage girls and young women in the name of "honor" because they have acted like normal teenage girls and young women?

Show me an American tradition analogous to Sharia "honor killing". I don't think you can, because it doesn't exist.

That's the difference. Their shock at the murder of a baby is only partial. They accept the murder of adults.

Take comfort if you will, but I fear it is only small comfort.

Are you kidding me? At least several times a year there’s a story here about a guy who kills his kids to get back at his estranged wife.

Considering half the houses in that part of town are boarded up and vacant, I’m betting it’s drug related.

sorry, but the muslim religion has revenge and murder as part of it’s holy books against the infidels. That religion is going to have to be eliminated from the earth, eventually. It is satanic and a partial plagarism of the bible.

"Crazy nutjobs live in every country"

Yeah, but some cultures have more crazy nut jobs than others. Islam is the breeding ground for crazy nut jobs.

Or this story:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1979555/posts

The problem is that the world has sick f____ in every country and of every religion. Mass killings are common place drugs or no drugs.

Today in Memphis and in W. Palm Beach. Yesterday in Texas.

Where will it happen tomorrow?

All I know is that we will soon have to read about someone, somewhere killing in mass numbers.

In America they do this 16 months earlier in the baby’s life and you’ll find a presidential contender who will defend the practice.

What are you talking about? Children in this country are murdered all the time - being Muslim has nothing to do with it.

Probably not. But, given the rat-hole locale, one can't help but think of 9/11, Khalid Sheik Mohamed, Abu Musab al Zarqawi, honor killings, stonings, FGM, and other savagery associated with the the Religion of Pieces. They do have a thing about beheading. Expect this guy in Chop Chop Square fairly soon.
