Alabama, Mobile, and Mobile County leaders are excited about the $40 billion tanker project deal that the United States Air Force Awarded to EADS and Northrop Grumman.
Here are some of the enthusiastic comments for area and state leaders:
* Alabama Governor Bob Riley: "To say this is a great day for Alabama is a monumental understatement. This will go down in history as one of our greatest days."
*Mobile Mayor Sam Jones: "In my judgment, the best proposal won. Mobile is an excellent location for an additional aircraft manufacturing facility in the U.S."
*Mobile County Commission President Stephen Nodine: "We are taking off literally and figuratively as the hottest city in America to do business."
*Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean: "The positive impact this will have on everyone in Mobile is enormous. This is one of the greatest days in Mobile County history."
*Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood:"ThyssenKrupp and now EADS/Northrop Grumman! Mobile County is entering a new era of economic prosperity."
*Bay Haas, Executive Director of the Mobile Airport Authority: "I applaud the team from Northrop Grumman, EADS North American, and Airbus for the work they have done in building the most capable tanker at the best value for the American people and our military."
*Marc Pelham, Director of the Brookley Complex: "This project along with ThyssenKrupp, Austal, the Container Terminal and the USA Cancer Center highlight Mobile's thriving economy."
I've read that this move will make this area the third largest aircraft manufacturing region in the world.
I was near the capitol today and this was quite the pro-Riley victory!
Riley has been a good governor for Alabama...he should celebrate this win.
Mobile Number 1 (Economic Growth)
"Mobile County will have the fastest growing economy over the next five years among all 363 American metropolitan areas, according to a new forecast by Moody's Economy.com, growing 34.31 percent from 2007 through 2012. "
airbus.
I love it when my taxes go to good causes.
But one lawmaker called the decision to award the contract to Northrop Grumman a blow to the American defense industry and an economic boon for European countries.
“These are the same European governments who are unwilling to support us in the global war on terror and over the last few months refused to provide even an additional 100 soldiers apiece for Afghanistan operations,” said Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-California.
“Instead, we have to send 3,200 additional U.S. Marines to Afghanistan while they take $35 billion in American taxpayer contracts.”

Washington is beyond broken and BENT. Follow the money. The management of this country is totally out of control.

The best governor in the country in my opinion...
I've heard him mentioned as a possible VP candidate.
I’ve been reading comments from Seattle papers about us rednex building planes...i didn’t hear a peep from the rest of the country when Clinton and company shutdown the new homeport after being opened for a year and a half.
Some of this will spill over to coastal Mississippi and the Pensacola, Florida area too.
That was before we got the plane deal.

Yup. See post #20 here.
What is the net economic impact of this deal? It sounds like a big, political, hooray, for Alabama in the short term. This is a European company that plans on selling both the military and commercial versions. I would like to see the net impact on the balance of payment for the United States/Europe, the net impact on aggregate jobs for the west coast and the south of the United States, and damn impact for an —> American company Boeing.
