FREEP this poll -- it's on the front page (middle) of the DailyPennsylvanian.com website. At issue is whether the University of Pennsylvania should set aside "women-only" hours at the gym to allow female Muslim students to exercise without their traditional burkas on. This policy was recently started at Harvard and may come to Penn.

“No” is winning. 89 to 11%
Separate but equal?
An idea whose time has come again.
Silly libs.
Done.....
Good idea.
Good idea.
Wait until the march on the gates of West Hollywood and the bridges of San Francisco....!
I used to exercise at a women only gym. A woman started coming, leaving her two little boys in the daycare. In spite of there only being women, she still wore long pants, long sleeves and a scarf while she did the step aerobics but she was always happy. I figured it was her only outlet. She walked to and from, pushing the boys in a stroller and even in hot weather, wearing a long coat and scarf.
Then one day her husband showed up in the lobby. You could hear him ranting away but they wouldn’t let him back because no men were allowed. But he could hear the pop music we danced to and he must not have approved because she never came back. Sad. So I’m guessing that a lot of people, muslim or not, would be okay with times when only one gender was there but what about the bump music?
Do we not learn from history? One of the first thing the Nazi did was restrict pool hours for non-Arians. This sets the precedence that the Muslim religion is more important that any other religion. Its the camel nose of taking over by making seemingly reasonable request. Yet it never stops. First is was foot baths, now its separate hours, next it will be special prayer rooms, the outcome will be Islamic or Shari Law. Dont forget that 80% of the Mosques in the USA preach anti-American rhetoric.
Keep on yanking America's junkyard dog's chain. That's real smart.
They should go to curves.....duh.
And built with Saudi money.
This is UPenn. The question should be whether Muslim women will allow transgender/transsexual men in their workout sessions.
I would assume that there would also be some Christian denominations that would be happy to have a “women-only” time. It seems to me that this is a business decision to try to meet the needs of clients, not just catering to a specific religion.
I think sometimes we get so hyper vigilant that we fail to see the wider context in what could be a common sense decision.
Even in the context of catering to Muslims, you bring up a good point in the potential for providing an outlet for people who are repressed.
Let me know what time they have reserved for 60-year old white guys who work for a living.
bump
Wake up people!
