Did anyone else experience a brief, 4-second power break (like a sub-station tripping) outside of Florida around 1:15 pm ET?

Florida’s largest electric company shut down a nuclear reactor south of Miami for safety reasons Tuesday.

That caused sporadic power outages covering large
portions of the state that could

last well into the night !!!

More than 3 million people are affected, the state says.

Not surprised. Charley hit us hard here- we were without power for 10 days- 2 weeks. I don’t know anyone who went to FEMA. I’m sure some did- but most of us just sucked it up and sweat... a LOT!

“Port of Miami?”

LOL, the Port of Miami. This reminds me of Dubai ports deal!! Like Rush I thought the whole thing was a big todo about nothing. For $50 you can get anything you want through security at any S. FL port.

BTW, at the larger Port Everglades north of Miami (Fort Lauderdale) there is some security getting in (I believe these are people that failed to get hired by the toll road authority as fare collectors), but there is NO, NONE, ZERO, ZIP, NADA security getting out. 000000.

Yeah, the 'sunshine state' generally isn't dark at 2pm.

“Did anything pop up re: Port of Miami?”

That’s right. Isn’t the POM where that questionable ‘Mohammed’ dude runs all of the operations?

I seem to remember blogging here about that guy. Wonder what ever happened to him?

They never reported what the safety issue is?

They're lucky this isn't the dead of summer with they're typical nasty Florida humidity...

Yep....those 4 Westinghouse W501F’s (some made in Japan) combined cycle plants over by Davie will keep your power on thru thick and thin....green, too, powered by Jet Fuel and Natural Gas...First one was the first one ever built.

Q. so what happens if/when we have a power outage like this on an election day? Electronic voting machines. Does every polling station have a gen set? I doubt it.

We also lost some traffic lights over by RayJay. Well... ok, we didn’t actually ‘lose’ them, but they did lose power for a little while. :-)

The best crocodilian story was about the python that ate a six foot gator in the ‘glades then something caused the snake to blow up. LOL

The best sleeping pill in existence is a meeting on system stability. I spent 40 years in the power industry the last 30 as a Supervisor and a Manager.

Large systems have a lot of inertia, so to speak, so small problems have little or no effect. So to pull a nuke off it would take a pretty good bang, I would like to see how the grid in that area is configured. We had a lot of System operator types posting during the Ohio outage very informative.

“They never reported what the safety issue is?”

Looks like a transformer at a nearby substation failed and they had to trip. You have to reduce the supply when you loose the load.

Crist recommends calling it a ‘Green out’, so as not to offend his friend Barry.

Q. so what happens if/when we have a power outage like this on an election day?

Since most in Florida can't figure out how to punch a ballot anyway, losing their power could possibly result in a chaotic statewide mental meltdown.
