...my sister-in-law is insisting that her daughter’s wedding be “black tie” for the guests....so in addition to transportation costs, hotel costs, wedding gift costs; I gotta rent a tux!...my wife says I need do it or it will be a big stink in the family....I’ve been to a lot of weddings over the years but I’ve never heard of one were the bride tells the guests what to wear....am I in the wrong about resenting this demand?

No, just see if you can find an American flag tux and wear a black tie.

I told (suggested) my guests what to wear, but it was a casual wedding on the beach. I didn't want them dressing up and ending up uncomfortable. I wanted to make sure they wore shorts and beach shoes and were dressed to have fun :~)

"...I gotta rent a tux!...my wife says I need do it..."

Do what your wife suggests. Resentment goes away when you see the big smile on your wife's face. jmo...

Is it for all the guests or family members? Is it your sister or your wife’s sister? Is she in the wedding? If it’s your sister I’m surprised your not a groomsman.

My dil’s sister got married, huge blow-out wedding, the whole family was in the wedding and it cost my son’s family alone, about a thousand bucks. The largest cost was the rental on the 11 yr old’s tux, $250 ridiculous.

They have to tell you what to wear? People used to know what to wear and when to wear it, whatever happened to Emily Post? ;)

The guests should never be told what to wear. I wouldn’t go.

Wear the tux. Trust ME, I never seen a man who didn’t look great in a tux, so do it knowing you will be turning female heads.

And remember, you won’t be causing any trouble, your wife will be happy and everyone who thinks it is out of line to tell people what to wear will be talking about the demanding, bitchy bride, not you, well, yes you, but it will be how HOT you look.

“.my wife says I need do it or it will be a big stink in the family”

I rebelled against family dysfunction and ended up happily single. Teaching my kids not to put up with it causes great distress in the ex’s life to this day.

Heck no, I would resent that too. A nice suit shows more class, personality and style. Tuxes just look rented.

Black Tie you say? Solution..wear a suit with a BLACK TIE.
Seriously, that mother is going to be a real pain in her daughter’s life..just wait until the first baby is due..wonder if the doctors and nurses will have to wear black tie too.

First: it’s her event, so she gets to call the dress code.

Second: a tux makes every man look hot. Just rent the thing. Trust me.

Throw 'em for a loop. Wear a kilt.

A kilt with a Prince Charlie coatee is actually the equivalent of WHITE TIE, so you'll one-up everybody there.

Wear some big ol’ cowboyboots and go for the blacktie and boots theme.
