McCain Says Report on Lobbyist Not True

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- John McCain denied a romantic relationship with a female telecommunications lobbyist on Thursday and said a report by The New York Times suggesting favoritism for her clients is "not true."

"I'm very disappointed in the article. It's not true," the likely Republican presidential nominee said as his wife, Cindy, stood alongside him during a news conference called to address the matter.

McCain described the woman in question, lobbyist Vicki Iseman, as a friend.

The newspaper quoted anonymous aides as saying they had urged McCain and Iseman to stay away from each other prior to his failed presidential campaign in 2000. In its own follow-up story, The Washington Post quoted longtime aide John Weaver, who split with McCain last year, as saying he met with lobbyist Iseman and urged her to steer clear of McCain.

Hard to tell if this was kneejerk or part of some long term strategy. Guess we’ll know pretty quick.

While I agree with you, that was still one very poor press conference.

“You’re full of horse manure! Go soak your head! The NY Times has been caught foisting false allegations - i.e. smear hack job on the fine man!”

That’s an intellegent response. Name calling and falling back on, “I’m a hero, you can’t ask me anything!”

"Sounds quoted, and factual."

Does it? Then how do you explain this?

Weaver says he arranged the meeting with Iseman — first reported by the New York Times — out of concern that she was “telling people around town” she was getting access to, and had influence with, McCain that Weaver says she did not have.

But Weaver insists he never talked to or asked Iseman about any romantic relationship with McCain because “there was no reason to.”

Not to nag, but why can't we all wait until we have the facts before we dance to MSM's fiddle?

Some seem quite satisfied with "anonymous sources."

Pretty disturbing, coming from Freepers.

It's one thing to say you won't vote for the guy, or you don't like his policies, but it seems some are more than happy to believe McCain to be guilty before the whole truth is clear.

For what? To see him harmed politically?

That's sad. Really pathetic.

You are NOT a McCain supporter?

You surprise me. I must now sit down and pour myself a stiff drink to get over the shock.

You don’t like him. Fine. Well done. Join a very large club of conservatives that don’t like the guy.

His record? Bash him on it.

His policy positions for the future? Excoriate him.

A factless New York Times hitpiece, which is looking more and more embarrassing to them as the day wears on? Better leave that alone, I would think.

Let evidence be your friend. Not the New York Times.

Both Mr. and Mrs. McCain denied in many ways and many times that there was no improper relationship. Go soak your head and puke the vile bile out of your soul!

Mrs McCain was involved with Mr McCain while he was married to his first wife. For some people, (even Bill Clinton and Democrats), adultry is not an improper relationship.

Others see the destruction of the family and children. I fail to see a reason to trust either Mr. or Mrs. McCain based on their history.

The Clintons came to mind immediately upon hearing about this “news”. We knew they would bring out the Big Guns against anything that moves against them. FGS, Clinton was getting his in the Oval Office.

The bigger story is not sex, but influence peddling. McCain wrote two letters to the FCC on behalf of the firm his alleged paramour represented. For someone who has cloaked himself in being a reformer and against special interests, this is especially damaging.

If you write a letter to your Congressman complaining about some problem you are a having with U.S. Government Agency X, someone on the Congressman's staff will send out a letter to that agency regarding your problem with the Congressman's letterhead, name and mechanically reproduced signature on it.

If this were a crime, every Congresscritter in Washington, DC would be guilty of it several thousand times over.

Where’s the NYT coverage of the Obama “Gay Sex and Crack” story?

The accuser takes a polygraph Tuesday. Why do you think the NTY ran this now?

I at least think of him as the anti-CNN&Co and a Christian Republican. Maybe I don’t know the facts?

There's still a bunch of us left on FR who remember the Clinton campaign play book.

I've got to hand it to MSNBC...Joe Scarborough and Chris Mathews who are interviewing Steve Schmidt, McCain's Campaign Senior Advisor.

Schmidt says "No one believes John Weaver was NYTmes Source".

Yet John McCain’s response was that of a guilty person and very Clintonian.

“Go soak your head and puke the vile bile out of your soul!”

I’d be careful how far out on a limb you go. We’re only a few news cycles away from, “In fact I did have a relationship that was inappropriate and wrong, now I need to go back and do the work of the American people”.

SO let me get this story straight: No sex, just innuendos. No corruption demonstrated, just allegations. No one to take credit for spilling their guts, just anonymous persons.

The story about the organic milk from upstate cows was a lot more interestsing, and 100% more truthful than this diatribe that the NY Times printed.

Since when did the “newspaper of record” become the National Enquirer?????

I thought Laura Ingraham’s analogy was great this morning. She said McCain thought he made friends with the media while riding around in 2000 in the Straight Talk Express. Just like the guy who lived with the grizzly bears in Alaska for 13 years until one decided to eat him.

If someone has some documentation about this, I say let loose the dogs of war. As you can probably guess from my tagline, I will not vote for him (local and state offices only in 2008), but my reasons are based on provable FACTS, speeches he’s made, bills he’s authored and/or supported—facts. Not lies.
