Bill Clinton: Texas Could Be Hillary's Last Stand Former President Tells Lone Star Crowd Wife Needs Wins in Texas and Ohio By RICK KLEIN and SARAH AMOS

Feb. 20, 2008 —

There's a Texas-sized stumbling block on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's comeback trail.

Even Clinton's most devoted surrogate -- her husband, Bill Clinton -- acknowledged the do-or-die stakes on Wednesday in Beaumont, Texas, conceding that a loss in Texas or Ohio would likely doom her candidacy.

"If she wins Texas and Ohio I think she will be the nominee; if you don't then I don't think she can. It's all on you," the former president told the audience at the beginning of his speech.

A series of demographic and organizational challenges are coming together to make the Lone Star State an extraordinarily difficult venue for Clinton, with her campaign needing a decisive win to overcome Sen. Barack Obama's growing edge in convention delegates.

With polls showing the race essentially tied, several independent political analysts say that even if Clinton takes an overwhelming share of Latino voters, she will be hard-pressed to carry the state, much less capture a large share of delegates.

And the unique way that Texas awards delegates could force Clinton to take as much as 55 percent of the state's vote just to break even in the battle for delegates, said Richard Murray, director of the University of Houston's Center for Public Policy.

"They've gotten some bad breaks here," Murray said. "Texas is not well set-up for her, and the Obama people have figured that out. It's tough but they've got no choice. They must win down here, and win convincingly."

Must-Win for Clinton

I tend to think that if Hillary had divorced Bill back in the day, when she SHOULD HAVE, she might have had a shot at the presidency. When she forfieted a divorce, she forfieted her own dignity and self resect. Instead, she condoned his wrong doing.

Furthermore, when she ran for the NY senate, she insisted she had no interest in running for president. She lied. I wouldn’t want ANYBODY with those moral credentials to run for president, or any other office in the nation.

I wouldn’t hire her to herd my sheep if I had any. I wouldn’t trust her do do the job. I can’t think of a good reason for anybody to vote for her, nor do I even begin to understand why anybody would. Who cares about the plumbing? The fact is, values of her type are not fit for the highest honor in the land.

On one hand he wants to salvage his own legacy, on the other he wants his bride to be the President even less than I do.

He's been making tons of money selling his influence as future 1st husband and he scared that that is about to stop and he'll be back to speaking fees as his primary source of income.

If I were Bill, I would seriously consider taking the bus instead of the plane for the next couple of weeks.

Oh sure. That's what she wants him to do. But if he's smart he will see through that and take the plane. ;^)

When Ann Richards was in a losing battle for re-election against GWB, she was asked if she wanted Bill Clinton to come to Texas to campaign for her.

Richards reply, "I don't even want Bill Clinton flying over Texas!"

It appears that Bill has fallen victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: Never go in against a Hillary when death is on the line!

The sooner Hillary is defeated the better.

Absolutely. People overestimate Obama's power once he is out in the open. No doubt political groupy-wise he has Hillary (and McCain) beat in spades. At the same time realize that he has essentially been singing to the choir.

The theory that somehow Hillary should be ressurrected because she'll be easier to beat is just silly. She may be more beatable but winning takes alot of variables. What is most important is ending the Clinton era and taking on the task at hand. Dems are showing up in droves to make clear that the Clinton's should not even dare try to seat/accept the MI/FL delegates or, to a lesser extent, try to swing Super Delegates. I have no doubt that the Clinton's idiotic declarations of intent regarding the SD's/MI/FL, not to mention their scorched earth style, have brought out these huge numbers to both vote for Obama and to send Billary packing.

Of course they are. They are the elites who control the party, which is why they will vote for Obama if he has the most pledged delegates won thru the primary system. They are not going to destroy the party and possibly lose the general election by giving the nomination to the Clintons over the people's choice, Obama. It would be insane to do so. It is not going to happen.

Exactly. Since SC and then after Super Tuesday Obama has been absolutely destroying Billary with those genuinely excited about him AND to cut off at the pass any idea that the Clintons will try to swing the Super Delegates to them (yes, them) or to do the most blatantly unfair tactic of seating the FL and (especially) the MI delegations. They will not commit conventional suicide. Billary is done.

People are standing in lines voting early in Texas. Early voting started yesterday and will last 2 weeks. From the people I saw in line... they are voting against Hillary!

What did you observe to suggest that?
