As Washington begins one of its favourite guessing games, the Arizona senator has refused to divulge any names. But aides have admitted that Tom Pawlenty's will be near the top of the shortlist.
Aged 47, the Minnesota governor will provide a youthful contrast to the 71-year-old war veteran, and is only a year older than Barack Obama, the Illinois senator who is the narrow Democrat favourite.
Other names in the mix include South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford and Florida Governor Charlie Crist, whose support for Mr McCain helped secure early primary victories in their respective states.
With the Democrats set to field the first female or black White House nominee, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison has emerged as a possibility, along with Bobby Jindal, who last year became the first Asian American to win a governorship, in Louisiana.

The article mentions Sanford of SC as a potential veep pick as well.
Questions for all:
1) Would Sanford make it more likely that you’d vote for McCain in the fall?
2) How excited would you get about Sanford?
3) Has Sanford been a good conservative governor in SC?
Not to this Gopher, thanks. He's shifted government spending from the state to localities through property taxes instead of lowering it, he's getting incredibly annoying through his belief in globull warming, and as a poster on another thread noted, Republicans do not control the House here for the first time in ten years thanks to seats lost under his watch. We used to have all the statewide elected positions - now the only one we hold is the Governor's chair.
Right now I don't have a heck of a lot to vote for - Squishy Norm Coleman gets my vote because he isn't Al Franken and that's a poor reason to vote for someone. Though I would consider voting for Pawlenty in the hopes a real conservative would be able to take over our statehouse.
Who cares?
There is hardly a Republican ticket that could not be made more negative to me by adding Guiliani. Particularly with such an elderly Presidential nominee.
There’s actually a thread from 2005 or so where Walken really did declare his aim for the Presidency.
Could I find it? Doubtful. But it’s there.
McCain needs the South. What about Rick Perry, Gov. Texas?
Yes, she is but I suspect she has 4 or 5 years worth of projects she wants to take on for the benefit of Alaskan Residents. Unlike a lot of politicians these days (both Democrat and Republican), she appears to have a high degree of integrity (and appears to want to keep her promises)...
A ridiculously phony headline. As the story says, McCain is close to beginning consideration of a Vice Presidential pick.
When the Brits talk about 'Asians' they frequently mean folks from India, Bengladesh, or Pakistan. As a result you see stories about rioting 'Asian' youth, meaning Muslims from those countries.
‘Unlike a lot of politicians these days (both Democrat and Republican), she appears to have a high degree of integrity (and appears to want to keep her promises)...”
Um, not so sure of her integrity...she is allowing a Mexican Consulate to be built in Alaska.
Rick Perry is not only detested here in TX, he originally planned to be Guiliani’s VP, so you can see how astute he is.
No TX candidates until ‘12.
“Who was it that once said the Vice Presidency is about as useful as a bucket of warm spit”?
John Nance Garner of Texas who actually used a more colorful term than spit but the press “cleaned it up” for him.
LOL!!!
Will Nyarlathotep be his running mate?? :-)
“When the Brits talk about ‘Asians’ they frequently mean folks from India, Bengladesh, or Pakistan. As a result you see stories about rioting ‘Asian’ youth, meaning Muslims from those countries.”
OK, your point? Jindal refers to himself as an Indian American and I could give a rip what Brits talk about. I am an American, not a globalist!
How Conservative is Carol Molnau ?
“Rick Perry is not only detested here in TX, he originally planned to be Guilianis VP, so you can see how astute he is”
Awesome!!! Glad to hear it!
Could J.C. Watts be a possibility?
