As Washington begins one of its favourite guessing games, the Arizona senator has refused to divulge any names. But aides have admitted that Tom Pawlenty's will be near the top of the shortlist.

Aged 47, the Minnesota governor will provide a youthful contrast to the 71-year-old war veteran, and is only a year older than Barack Obama, the Illinois senator who is the narrow Democrat favourite.

Other names in the mix include South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford and Florida Governor Charlie Crist, whose support for Mr McCain helped secure early primary victories in their respective states.

With the Democrats set to field the first female or black White House nominee, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison has emerged as a possibility, along with Bobby Jindal, who last year became the first Asian American to win a governorship, in Louisiana.

“I’m not discounting what you said about Bobby referring to himself as an Indian American but I’ve been to A few Bobby Jindal events and I live here in Louisiana (obviously) and I can tell you that his ethnicity is rarely brought up, except by the media. People love him down here”

So do I!!!

Don't you just love how they say it doesn't matter but they are always the ones to bring it up?!

Well, Ford was going to carry KS anyway. Ford needed either a southerner or an easterner. Schweiker increased the likelihood of Reagan winning the nomination — possibly decreased the likelihood of winning the ‘76 general...we’ll never know though.

“McCain needs the South. What about Rick Perry, Gov. Texas?”

Two pro-illegal alien types on the same ticket? I guess it’s ok so long as you figure that Juan hasn’t spit in our collective faces enough already.

My thoughts exactly! Is that why Conservatives in Texas are so against him?

He, -ahem- has some gay backstories.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, especially in the democratic primary (Perry was a Rat until about 8 years ago).

McCain it the only straight guy in the race - we hope.

This article is bunk. Who would be so foolish to pick a nominee when its early and he has not won yet.

You may believe so. The fact that many conservative leaders today are fighting each other says otherwise.

You are incorrect my friend.

This is just an effort by those who really don't believe in conservatism to redefine the label.

you cannot be a conservative and favor big government.

you cannot be a conservative and support actions or legislation that is anti-law and order, i.e. Illegal Immigration(McCain-Kennedy).

you cannot be a conservative and support reducing your 1st amendment rights (McCain-Fiengold), 2nd amendment rights, etc.

You cannot be a conservative and support the Global-warming scam (McCain-Lieberman)

You cannot be a conservative and NOT support ANWAR and any and all efforts to reduce our dependency on foriegn oil.

You cannot be a conservative and support Abortion, and that includes Embryonic stem-cell research.

You cannot be a conservative and NOT support tax cuts (see Bush's Tax Cuts and McCains non-support).

You cannot be a conservative and Not be for the wholesale reduction of the size of the government.

You can be a moderate and not support some of these things, but not a conservative.

Paging Ms.Rice

Ms. Rice is over her head in her current position. Besides I'd hope for someone who prefers Israelis over arabs.

No, no. I meant Reagan's choice of Schweiker in the primary decreased his chances of winning the nomination. Conservatives were puzzled and very unhappy with the choice.

From what I understand that is only one of the problems with the guy, the TTC being the other.
