Conservatives can trust Huckabee
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ^ | 2-16-2008 | Tim Dotson

Mike Huckabee is the choice of conservatives.

On fiscal conservatism, he believes wholeheartedly in the reduction of cost to the taxpayer, especially entitlements. In Arkansas as governor, he was able to reduce welfare rolls by 50% and he held the line on taxes, leaving them the same as when he took office. He successfully fought to increase deductions and lower taxes such as capital gains. He also signed the Americans for Tax Reform's pledge to not raise taxes.

Huckabee understands that money spent on entitlements is almost three times the amount of spending on the military. Thomas Jefferson said, "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." By working to reduce those who are dependent on entitlements, we strengthen our economy and our nation.

On conservative foreign policy, Huckabee vows to finish the war in Iraq, leaving when democracy has been established. He is fervent about removing our dependency on foreign oil by increasing our production at home for the short term and investing in renewable energy for the long term. He also is committed to securing the borders and ending the cycle of illegal immigration, which has become such a huge problem for the United States today.

Huckabee is the only candidate I completely trust to support our Second Amendment rights, as he has a longstanding track record as a sportsman and conservationist. For hunters and shooters of all sports, and those who believe they have the right to own a firearm, Huckabee is the only choice.

On moral conservatism, he is the only candidate who is firmly and unequivocally pro-life. He also wants marriage defined as a union between a man and a woman, and he successfully implemented a law stating that in Arkansas.

For members of the working class who are tired of having a large portion of their paycheck go to support those who will not work or are here illegally, to sportsmen who are tired of losing their rights, to Christians who are tired of seeing their values and beliefs represented as something to be shunned and to those who truly believe in democracy, there is an action you can take.

You can vote for Mike Huckabee.

I found out why he had the state computer hard drives ruined when he left .... “to protect any personal information employees might have left on them”.

Exactly. Throughout his tenure as governor, the Clinton/Tucker muckrakers were crawling all over nearly every move anyone made in his administration, looking to cause trouble. Many false little "scandals," many complaints, many cases thrown out of court, etc.

You know the facts. As long as there are not a majority of committed delegates for McCain, there is a chance. Who knows? Perish the thought, but McCain may not even be in charge of his faculties by the time of the convention.

Cool. Any updates on the whole “freeing rapists like Dumond to rape again” thing? He got any changes of heart, apologies, admissions of error, anything like that? Any platform positions about how he’d use the Presidential pardon power? The last Arkansas guy really burned us there, and this one seems almost worse in that area, so an update would be good.

Club Slingers for Growth?

That would, I suppose, be the Club for Growth, which is to economic conservatives what the NRA is to gun owners. The respected group presided over by Pennsylvania's own Pat Toomey, the Conservative Republican who very nearly retired the McCain clone Arlen Specter in 2004.

Too bad Huck was so singularly focused on helping his buddy McCain by getting the distant second place Romney out of the race that he couldn't figure out he actually needed Romney to continue to be relevant.

And now McCain has no further use for him!

And his supporters actually think they can expand his appeal by denigrating economic conservatives and former Romney supporters?

And we’re supposed to trust an editorial that uses a fake Jefferson quote?

The last I checked, I have been "investing" in something called "Social Security" that the fed's have been trying to convince me is a guaranteed "retirement pay-out" based upon my "investment."

Are you admitting that it's actually nothing more than an income tax and as it's designed (with a cap) is simply a transfer of wealth from the impoverished to the wealthy?

Ninety to one hundred commutations per year in Arkansas is a pittance.

Arkansas, as I understand, does not have the "time off for good behavior" that other states have. Hence, it is customary for massive numbers of such requests to flow into the Governor's office. Gov. Huckabee paid attention to his responsibility, there.

Dumond, however, was commuted by Jim Guy Tucker, previous to Huckabee's administration and pardoned by a Clinton/Tucker appointed parole board. (His parole was also lobbied for by many Arkansas conservatives, who apparently thought that Clintonistas were persecuting the man.)

And BTW, yes, Huckabee has repeatedly expressed his regrets for playing his (very small and hesitant) role in the Dumond matter.

Snort. Picture....thousand words. I can’t believe we are even talking about that doofus at this point. Weeks ago I posted a list of Huckabee’s most decidedly non-conservative policies and positions that has yet to be rebutted. There is more to being a conservative than just being able to thump a Bible convincingly.

Way past time to reform FDR's ponzi scheme. Huckabee hasn't jumped on "the third rail" as Thompson has, but a cue may be taken from his views on healthcare -- which are to empower the individual (as opposed to Democrat plans for governmental paternalism, or the present corporatist paternalism).

Who should conservatives want pissing on them? Little John or Friar Huck?

Tough call.

I don’t trust anyone who tells me that conservatives can trust Huckleberry.

Why would the author feel it necessary to assure us it’s OK to trust Schmucklebee unless the vibes are that the Huckster can’t be trusted.

And why should I believe this musician/facility guy any more than I would Hicklebee?

I've looked into many, many such slices of slander. About 90% are distortions and lies. The other 10% have reasonable explanations.

But I can understand you getting tired of the burden of spreading such filth.

OK. Then please account for this:

Gov. Huckabee is on a roll: He has freed more convicts than all of his recent predecessors combined – more than 10 times as many as Gov. Clinton during a 10-year period from 1983 to 1992.

How did he, as a conservative presumably cognizant of what evil is, exceed Clinton's record in this area, in your opinion?

Employer supplied healthcare, of course, when the alternative is personal budget-busting.

I told you. Gov. Huckabee actually took this constitutional responsiblity in Arkansas seriously, instead of doing what was politically expedient or popular.

I've already answered your question. Because of the unprecidented, Internet-fostered slander campaign against Huckabee, for the sake of his rivals. (Well, for the sake of his rivals that have fallen by the wayside, plus Ron Paul.)

I believe his record of thorough and brilliant conservative leadership

You have a very strange interpretation of what conservative is, then. Pushing for tax hikes, nanny-state, pro-illegal immigration, etc. is not conservative.

So why does the Club for Growth consider him the tax raiser from hell?

I find Huck an embarrassment to the party. I'm looking for a candidate who can face cold, hard facts. Not one who, when confronted with such facts, says "I believe in miracles."

Yep, employee benefits are shameful.

We corpratist paternalists who offer such to our employees are doing a disservice to them.
